Knights Edge Steelhawks in Junior Semi-Final to Advance to City Championships

Under the lights in Sault Ste Marie, the Superior Heights Steelhawks hit the turf to meet the St Mary’s Knights in a junior Sault Ste Marie High School Football 2021 semi-final on October 21st.

5:45 into the opening quarter, Brayden Luzzi rushes for a 12 yard Knights touchdown at the 6:15 mark of the quarter to give St Mary’s a 6 – 0 lead. Nate Carter convert was unsuccesful to keep the score at 6 – 0 for the Knights. With 58.9 seconds remaining in the first, Knight quaterback Matti Tucker finds Nate Carter with a 34 yard pass for Carter to carry the ball for a 1 yard major to bring the lead to 12 – 0. Carter finds the uprights for a convert to add to the lead 13 – 0. With the buzzer sounding at the end of the quarter, Michael Gallivan fires 36 yard pass to Tye Rushon for a 46 yard run to score the Steelhawks first touchdown of the contest. Daikaden Gauthier-Long kicked the extra point for Superior Heights to close the gap to 13 – 6. Tye Rushon carries the ball for a Superior Heights touchdown with 12.9 seconds left in the third to even the game 13 – 13 for the Steelhawks. Daikaden Gauthier-Long gives the blue and silver a 14 – 13 lead with the extra point.

Noah Wilding rushes the ball into the Steelhawk end zone at 3:41 of the final quarter to improve the Knights lead to 19 – 14. Koen Kurylo catches a two point St Mary’s conversion from Tucker to bring the lead to 21 – 14 for the maroon and black. With the buzzer ending the game and one play left for the Steelhawks, Rushon evades three tackles to pull Superior Heights within one on a six yard carry. With an unsuccessful two point conversion attempt.

St Mary’s quarterback Matti Tucker told Saultsports that ““Superior Heights played a good game. Back and forth, back and forth. It was down to one play of the game. It was a really exciting game. We’re looking forward to playing in the finals.”

With the 21 – 20 win, the Knights advance to the junior final on October 28th with the winner of Korah Colts and White Pines Wolverines semi-final on Friday, October 22nd.
