Coming off an 8 – 5 win in Sault Ste Marie 24 hours later over the visiting North Bay Battalion, the Soo Greyhounds returned to the ice at the Memorial Gardens against their second game of the weekend against the Battalion on Saturday, October 23rd in Ontario Hockey League action.
2:32 into the opening period, Brandon Coe catches a cross ice pass to fire a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle from Liam Arnsby to find the back of Greyhound Charlie Schenkel’s net to give the Battalion a 1 – 0 lead. Matvey Petrov notched the other helper on Coe’s goal. Owen Outwater sinks North Bay’s second of the game at 12:26 of the period from the left faceoff circle to find the back of Schenkel’s net over the Soo’s netminder’s left shoulder. Anthony Romani and Ty Nelson drew the contributors on Outwater’s goal. Scoring his seventh on the season, Tye Kartye picks up a loose puck to the left of Joe Vrbetic to chip the Soo’s first goal over Vrbetic’s left shoulder to pull the Greyhounds within one at 14:52. Tanner Dickinson and Ryan O’Rourke had the assists on Kartye’s powerplay goal. With three seconds remaining the opening period, Ty Nelson fires a shot along the ice from the left blueline through traffic to send the visitors into the first intermission up 3 – 1. Petrov and and Josh Currie set uup Nelson’s powerplay goal at the 19:57 mark of the first.
Scoring the Battalion’s fourth of the game and chasing Schenkel from between the Greyhound pipes 1:59 into the middle stanza, Michael Podolioukh picks up a turnover in front of the Soo’s netminder to lift a wrist shot over the rookie Greyhounds right shoulder. Owen Van Steensel and Dalyn Wakely added the helpers on the visitors fourth of the game to bring the Battalion’s lead to 4 – 1. With netminder Samuel Ivanov on the Greyhound bench for an extra attacker and create a six on four powerplay Kartye catches a pass from the left of Vrbetic’s net from Cole MacKay to find the back of North Bay’s net for his second of the game at 16:55 of the third. Tanner Dickinson had the other contributor on Kartye’s eighth of the 2021 season. Joe Vrbetic turned away 31 of 33 saves in the Battalion’s 4 – 2 win while Charlie Schenkel stopped one of four shots in twenty minutes before Samuel Ivanov made 12 of 13 saves in the loss.
The Greyhounds will be back in action for a midweek clash on Wednesday, October 27 when the Kitchener Rangers make an appearance at the Memorial Gardens for a 7:07 p.m puck drop.
