2026 CJFL National Semi-Final Preview | From Undefeated Season to National Contenders: Cougars Host Regina in Historic CJFL Semifinal

The Sault College Cougars have conquered the Ontario Football Conference, but their pursuit of a national championship is far from finished.

After completing an undefeated 8–0 regular season and capturing the 2026 Ontario Football Conference (OFC) championship, the Cougars will welcome the Prairie Football Conference (PFC) champion Regina Thunder to Superior Heights on Saturday, October 24th, for a 7:00 p.m kickoff in the 2026 Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) National Championship semifinal.

In just their second season competing in the OFC, the Cougars have established themselves as one of the conference’s premier programs. Now, with an opportunity to advance to the CJFL National Championship game, head coach Paul Orazietti and his team are preparing for what could be their biggest challenge of the season.

For Orazietti, however, the message inside the Cougars’ locker room remains unchanged.

“Just go 1 and 0.”

Cougars Complete Perfect Regular Season and Capture OFC Championship
The Cougars entered the 2026 campaign with championship aspirations and delivered an impressive performance throughout the regular season, winning all eight games while demonstrating their ability to compete on both sides of the football.

Sault College opened the season with a 40–22 road victory over the Hamilton Hurricanes on August 15 before returning home to defeat the Quinte Riptides 64–13 on August 22.

The Cougars continued their winning ways with a 48–27 road victory over the Ottawa Sooners, followed by a 42–15 win against the St. Clair Saints on September 5.

Additional victories over Ottawa, London and St. Clair helped Sault College complete its undefeated regular season, including a convincing 52–10 road win over the London Beefeaters on September 19 and a 45–25 home victory against the Saints on October 3.

The Cougars then turned their attention to the postseason.

On October 10, Sault College hosted the Ottawa Sooners in an OFC semifinal at Superior Heights and came away with a 39–20 victory to advance to the league championship game.

A week later, the Cougars welcomed the London Beefeaters for the OFC Final on October 17. In front of their home supporters, Sault College secured a 26–21 victory to capture the Ontario championship and complete the first major championship milestone in the young program’s development.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, Orazietti credited the dedication of his players and coaching staff.

“It is a huge accomplishment for our program and is the result of all the hard work our players and coaches put in this season,” Orazietti said. “In addition, this championship continues to establish the Sault as a great football community and Sault College as a school of sport excellence.”

A Championship Mindset from the Beginning
While winning an OFC championship in the program’s second competitive season represents a significant accomplishment, Orazietti explained that his expectations for the team have remained high since the beginning.

With approximately 30 years of coaching experience, Orazietti believes that championship programs are built through preparation, recruiting, player development and a consistent expectation of success.

“As a coach over my 30-year career I’ve always believed that every time you step on the field you should expect to win and prepare with that mindset,” he said. “Even in our first year we wanted to win it all. I think you need that mindset if you’re going to be successful at any level.”

Orazietti pointed to the combination of quality offseason recruits and returning veterans as a significant factor in the Cougars’ success this season.

He also emphasized the importance of having coaches who are committed to improving their players every day.

“To me our formula is simple; recruit better players than the other teams and have competent coaches who care about player improvement working with them every day,” Orazietti said. “If you do that it’s not hard to win.”

Although the Cougars have achieved considerable success in a short period, Orazietti noted that the program’s development has been a longer process than the results might suggest from the outside.

“I am extremely proud of our coaches and our players,” he said. “I’m passionate about football because it is truly the ultimate team game and everyone is pulling on the rope this year without question.”

He added that the program has been working toward this level of success for three years and that he expected the team to compete for championships regardless of whether it was in its first season or its tenth.

The Importance of Staying 1–0
One of the defining characteristics of the Cougars’ season has been their ability to remain focused on the immediate challenge rather than becoming distracted by their undefeated record or championship expectations.

Orazietti said the team approached every week as an opportunity to improve, regardless of its opponent or position in the standings.

“Our mindset each week was just on self-improvement and that every game is just another rung on a ladder,” he explained. “We treated every game this year like we just needed to be 1 and 0.”

That approach helped the Cougars maintain their focus throughout the regular season and into the playoffs.

Rather than allowing the pressure of an undefeated campaign to become a distraction, the players concentrated on preparing for each opponent and executing their responsibilities.

Now, as the Cougars prepare for their first national semifinal challenge of the season, that same philosophy will be essential.

Following the OFC championship victory, Orazietti reminded his players that their original objective extended beyond winning the provincial title.

“We reminded our players this week that we didn’t start the process back in July to win the Ontario Championship, we came together as a group 12 weeks ago to win a National Championship,” he said. “The goal hasn’t changed.”

Regina Thunder Present a Different Challenge
Standing between the Cougars and a place in the national championship game are the Regina Thunder, who arrive in Sault Ste. Marie after capturing the 2026 Prairie Football Conference championship.

Regina compiled a strong regular-season record, earning victories over the Edmonton Wildcats, Calgary Colts, Winnipeg Rifles, Edmonton Huskies and Saskatoon Hilltops. The Thunder also demonstrated their offensive capabilities with several high-scoring performances throughout the campaign.

After suffering a 46–30 loss to the Calgary Colts on October 4, Regina responded emphatically in the postseason.

The Thunder defeated Calgary 40–10 in the PFC semifinal on October 11 before facing the Saskatoon Hilltops in the conference final on October 18.

Regina secured the PFC championship with a 44–19 victory over Saskatoon, earning its place in the CJFL national semifinal against Sault College.

Orazietti recognizes that Regina will present a different level of physicality and execution than the Cougars have encountered during their OFC campaign.

“They are big, they are physical and they are well coached,” he said. “The Prairie conference represents the gold standard nationally for CJFL football.”

The Thunder have demonstrated the ability to produce points through multiple offensive weapons while maintaining a disciplined approach. Their defensive front is another area that has caught Orazietti’s attention.

“Regina in particular does not make very many mistakes and they have weapons everywhere,” he said. “They have an incredible defensive front and represent a challenge like we have not seen this year.”

Despite the respect he has for the Prairie champions, Orazietti believes his team has the talent to compete.

“Having said that anybody who has seen us play knows that we have some weapons of our own and we just need to focus on going 1 and 0.”

Cougars Receive Major Recognition in OFC Awards
The Cougars’ championship season has also been reflected in the league’s individual awards and all-star selections.

Orazietti was named OFC Coach of the Year after guiding Sault College through an undefeated regular season and an OFC championship run.

Running back Sam Mustapha (#23) received the Outstanding Offensive Player award, while receiver Rylan Varcoe (#84) was recognized as Outstanding Offensive Rookie.

Offensive lineman William Brine (#70) earned Outstanding Offensive Lineman honours, and Nikolas Vecchio (#21) received the Alex Stajic Outstanding Special Teams Player award.

Sault College also placed several players on the OFC all-star teams, highlighting the talent and depth throughout the roster.

The Cougars’ all-star selections included:

  • Offensive line: William Brine (#70), John Lemalu (#53) and Braxton Clarke (#78)
  • Receiver: Rylan Varcoe (#84)
  • Running back: Sam Mustapha (#23)
  • Quarterback: Emerson Peterkin (#11)
  • Defensive line: George Limb (#16)
  • Linebackers: Grant Mathewson (#44) and Ethan Carchidi (#51)
  • Defensive backs: Russell Beaubrun (#25) and Christian Barsic (#5)

The individual honours reflect the contributions of players across the offensive, defensive and special-teams units, all of which will be important against a well-rounded Regina team.

Home-Field Advantage Could Be Crucial
With the national semifinal taking place at Superior Heights, the Cougars will have the opportunity to draw energy from their home crowd once again.

The atmosphere surrounding the team’s recent postseason victories has demonstrated the enthusiasm building around football in Sault Ste. Marie, and Orazietti believes community support can make a difference in a game of this magnitude.

“We are excited to be at home,” he said. “We could feel the crowd behind us in the last game and we will need all that great energy this week to walk away with the win.”

The head coach is optimistic that local supporters will turn out for the national semifinal and help create an atmosphere worthy of the occasion.

“I think we’re going to have an amazing crowd behind us this weekend and we look forward to doing everything we can to reward them for their support.”

For Orazietti, the Cougars’ success also represents something larger than the achievements of a football team.

He believes the OFC championship has reinforced Sault Ste. Marie’s reputation as a football community and demonstrated that a northern Ontario program can compete with teams from larger centres.

“The support from Sault College and the community has been extraordinary,” he said. “I think there’s a real sense of pride locally any time our small northern community can beat the big centers in Southern Ontario and win a Provincial Championship in any sport.”

“At our core Sault Ste. Marie is a football community and I love it.”

One More Step Toward a National Championship
The Cougars have already accomplished a great deal in 2026. An undefeated regular season, an OFC championship and multiple league awards have established the program as a force in Ontario junior football.

However, the opportunity awaiting them on Saturday represents a chance to take another significant step forward.

A victory over Regina would send Sault College to the CJFL National Championship game, putting the Cougars within reach of a national title in only their second season competing in the Ontario Football Conference.

For a program built on high expectations, disciplined preparation and a commitment to improvement, the challenge is exactly where Orazietti believes his team should be.

Asked what defeating Regina and advancing to the national championship would mean for the program, the coach kept his answer consistent with the message that has guided the Cougars all season.

“Honestly, what it would mean is something that we can reflect on after it’s over,” Orazietti said. “Right now that is the expectation. Just go 1 and 0.”

The Sault College Cougars will host the Regina Thunder at Superior Heights on Saturday, October 24, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the 2026 CJFL National Championship semifinal.

The Ontario champions have taken care of business at home throughout the postseason. Now, with a national championship opportunity on the line, they will look to make another statement in front of their hometown supporters.
