Abbey Engel is no stranger to the Sault Ste Marie, Ontario or to the sport of curling. Being a Sault Local, Engel attended Korah Collegiate for high school, which is where she began competing in the sport. “Korah developed my foundational skills and the team was fortunate to be city champion,” says Engel.
She then began her post secondary education at Sault College, where she studied business. It was during this time that she developed her skills in the sport. She describes the training to be “elevated”, and she had the opportunity to switch from vice to skip. Her hard work and dedication to the sport definitely did not go unnoticed, as she was recognized as the team’s MVP.
Now, Abbey will be transferring to Algoma to complete her degree. By staying local, she is able to continue being in close proximity with her support systems, volunteer, and work whilst competing and continuing her studies.
“We’re very excited to have Abbey join the varsity women’s team! Her dedication and positive attitude are assets to the program and as a model Thunderbird. We are looking forward to a great season on the ice,” says Head Coach Josh Porco.
