The Sault College Cougars made a major statement Saturday afternoon at Superior Heights Field, defeating the St. Clair Saints 42-14 in a matchup between the top two teams in the CJFL Ontario Football Conference. The victory not only kept the Cougars perfect at 4-0 on the season, but also ended a remarkable seven-year regular-season unbeaten streak for the Saints, who had not suffered a regular-season loss since 2019.

St. Clair entered the contest as the defending OFC champions and held a 3-0 record, matching Sault College’s record heading into the highly anticipated matchup. Instead, the Cougars controlled the game from the opening quarter and never looked back, scoring 42 points while holding the Saints to just 14.

For Cougars head coach Paul Orazietti, the significance of the victory was recognized, but the focus quickly turned toward the remainder of the season.

“It was a nice short-term, temporary feeling of satisfaction, but we’re back to work on Monday,” Orazietti said. “Championships aren’t handed out in week four.”

Orazietti emphasized that the Cougars cannot allow a big victory to change their approach as they continue through the OFC schedule.

“We don’t care who the opponent is. We just need to have the same work-like mentality every time we hit the practice field or the game field. The goal remains the same — getting better each week,” he said. “We know overconfidence builds complacency.”

The Cougars’ success against St. Clair was built on strong execution on both sides of the football. Sault College established control early, jumping out to a 21-1 lead after the opening quarter before extending the advantage to 28-1 at halftime.

Orazietti credited his coaching staff and players for their preparation throughout the week and their ability to execute the game plan once the ball was kicked off.

“The key to executing the game plan was exactly that — execution of the game plan,” Orazietti said. “I felt like our coordinators did a great job of prepping our guys for every scenario and every look they would see, and they simply executed and did their job.”

Veteran Sam Mustaspha led the Cougar rushing attack with 18 carries for 135 yards, while Rylan Varcoe added four carries for 117 yards and Jaiden Trudeau contributed four carries for 84 yards. Jayden Ralph finished with seven carries for 50 yards.

Quarterback Emerson Peterkin completed 19 of 35 passing attempts, while Nick Vecchio provided another strong performance with 11 kicks for 323 yards and three successful field goals.

The Cougars also received major contributions defensively. Denver Mina recorded five tackles and one assisted tackle, Christian Barsic added four tackles, and veteran George Limb finished with one tackle, one assisted tackle and two sacks.

Despite the lopsided score, the Saints entered the contest with a reputation as one of the OFC’s strongest programs, making the Cougars’ performance even more significant. St. Clair quarterback Nolan Bryans completed seven of 16 passes for 87 yards and rushed seven times for 61 yards. George Arbez completed five of 16 passes for 86 yards.

Ben Heath led the Saints through the air with five receptions for 98 yards, while Sault Ste. Marie’s Nate Carter recorded three receptions for 56 yards and also had eight kicks for 284 yards. Jake Schuh added 33 rushing yards on six carries.

Defensively, Kage Neff led St. Clair with five tackles, while EJ Burgher recorded four tackles.

The Cougars showed composure throughout the game, particularly when the Saints managed to find the end zone in the third quarter. St. Clair cut the deficit to 28-8 on a touchdown from Carter before Sault College responded with another Vecchio field goal and continued to pull away.

Orazietti said he was especially proud of the team’s commitment and ability to stay focused regardless of how the game unfolded.

“I’m extremely proud of the work and the continued commitment to the process of getting better,” Orazietti said. “We tell our guys adversity and success are treated just the same. They did a great job of blocking out the noise when adversity hit.”

The Cougars eventually pushed their advantage to 42-8 before St. Clair added a late touchdown to make the final 42-14.

While defeating the defending champions and ending their seven-year regular-season streak represents one of the biggest wins in the young history of the Sault College program, Orazietti knows there is still plenty of football to be played.

The Cougars will now turn their attention to the Ottawa Sooners, who visit Rocky DiPietro Field on Saturday, September 12th for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Sault College defeated Ottawa 48-27 in the nation’s capital on August 29th and will look to complete the regular-season sweep.

Orazietti knows the Cougars cannot afford to relax following their statement victory over St. Clair.

“We remind them that any of the top four teams are more than capable of knocking us off if we don’t come with the right energy and attitude,” he said. “We also remind them that preparation and attention to detail are how we get the results we’re looking for.”

For a Sault College program now sitting at 4-0, the message is clear: the Cougars have earned the right to celebrate their latest accomplishment, but the ultimate goal remains ahead of them.
