Spartans Edge Sabercats in the Sault’s 2023 OSFL Varsity Season Opener in Sudbury

The varsity Sault Sabercats headed east to open up their 2023 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) season with a late afternoon kickoff against the (1-0) Sudbury Spartans at James Jerome Sports Complex on Saturday, May 27th. The Spartans were coming off a 19 – 0 win on May 20th in Clarington with a win over the Knights.

With time ticking down and the Sabercats on the last possession of the game, Ronan Provenzano scores a touchdown to bring the game to 28 – 27 for the Spartans. The Sault attempts a two point conversion to send the Sabercats home with the win, but unsuccessful, the Sault heads home 0-1 in the 28 – 27 loss in Sudbury on Saturday afternoon. Provenzano and Jaiden Trudeau both had two touchdowns in the loss. Provenzano”s touchdowns came on a rushing play and one receiving from quarterback Matti Tucker while Trudeau’s majors came on a punt return and a kickoff return in Sudbury.

Sabercat coach Matt Premo told Saultsports that “I was happy with parts of the game but in the end too inconsistent and we have some things that we will definitely clean up but that’s to be expected in the first game of the season.”

“I am proud that our guys battled right to the end and gave us a chance to win,” added Premo.

The Sabercats next opponents will be the Sudbury Spartans on July 10th in Sault Ste Marie in a 4:00 p.m start.
