Soo Black Sox U11 coach Steve McLeod told Saultsports.com that “Our coaching staff saw a lot of positives over the weekend and from what the players showed us, we have plenty of potential. With only five returnees from 2022, we’re a relatively inexperienced group. We’ve also had a late start this spring due to the weather and have only had seven on-field practices. In spite of this, the players were still able to execute some of the things they’ve learned in practice and found a way to battle for four games in the heat and pick up a few wins to start the season.”
“For me, the wins are irrelevant right now. Our goal as coaches is to keep developing their fundamentals and work with them on maintaining their focus for an entire seven inning game. I believe the players realized very quickly over the weekend that at this age (11U), there’s a lot more going on than their experience in house league and 9U Select. They need to be in the game mentally for every pitch on offense and need to know what they’re going to do before the pitch is even thrown on defense. They’ll develop these skills with more practice and game experience. added McLeod.
When asked about this upcoming weekend, McLeod said that “we’re on the road in Midland, Ontario this weekend for a tournament with round robin games scheduled against Burlington, Guelph, and Midland. This will provide our team with an additional opportunity to develop their game skills early in the season and give the players a chance to hang out, get to know each other a little better and hopefully begin to gel as a team.”
The Soo U11 Black Sox will be back in action at home on Friday, June 9th when they host Soo Michigan Sluggers in a 6:00 p.m contest at Sinclair Fields.
