The St Mary’s Knights are city champions once again!
On Thursday, October 29th, the defending 2025 Sault Ste. Marie Junior High School Football City Champions returned to the turf at Superior Heights field with one goal in mind: defend their championship title. Standing in their way were the Korah Colts, as the two teams squared off in the 2026 Sault Ste. Marie Junior High School City Championship.
The Knights delivered a strong performance, finding the end zone four times on their way to a convincing 28-7 victory over the Colts to secure another city championship.
St. Mary’s opened the scoring at 4:38 of the first quarter when Russell Pine broke through the Korah defensive line from six yards out to put the Knights ahead 7-0. Tyler Diluzio added the extra point to give St. Mary’s the early advantage.
The Colts responded in the second quarter. At 11:06, Kaelan Nelles powered his way into the end zone on a 10-yard rushing touchdown to even the contest at 7-7. Tyson Brown successfully converted the extra point to bring Korah back on level terms.
However, the Knights quickly regained control. At 2:22 of the second quarter, Aiden Dacosta hauled in a seven-yard pass from quarterback Landon Chiarot before finishing the scoring play with a two-yard carry into the end zone. Diluzio connected on the conversion, restoring St. Mary’s lead at 14-7.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Knights added to their advantage in the fourth. At 11:23, Carter Tait broke through for a 10-yard touchdown run, extending the St. Mary’s lead to 21-7 after another successful Diluzio conversion.
Blake Pellerin put the finishing touches on the championship performance with a 10-yard touchdown carry at the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Diluzio once again split the uprights on the extra point, completing the scoring and securing the Knights’ 28-7 championship victory.
With four rushing touchdowns and a solid defensive effort, St. Mary’s successfully defended its city championship, continuing its run as the team to beat in Sault Ste. Marie junior high school football.
The victory also earns the Knights the opportunity to compete for a regional championship.
St. Mary’s will now prepare to host the Sudbury representative on Monday, November 9th, when the Knights take the field in the 2026 Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (NOSSA) Junior Championship.
After successfully defending their city title, the Knights will look to carry that championship momentum into their next challenge as they set their sights on NOSSA gold.
