Season Preview | Savage Takes the Helm as Korah Colts Prepare for 2026–2027 Hockey Season

The Korah Colts boys’ hockey program will usher in a new era on Sunday, November 1, when head coach Aaron Savage takes over behind the bench for the 2026–2027 season.

The Colts will open their campaign at the John Rhodes Community Centre, beginning a season that will feature a significantly different roster, new leadership and the challenge of building team chemistry early.

With only three returning players, Savage and his coaching staff will have plenty of work ahead as they look to bring the group together and establish an identity. However, the new bench boss is encouraged by the team’s early commitment and believes the Colts have the potential to compete for both city and NOSSA championships.

“We have an almost completely different-looking team this season, so a big part of the early going will be coming together and establishing how we want to play,” Savage said. “Our expectation is to compete every night and keep improving throughout the season.”

Savage emphasized that the team’s goals will depend on establishing strong habits from the beginning, with accountability, preparation and a team-first mentality serving as the foundation.

“There’s a proud tradition at Korah, and we want this group to take ownership of carrying that forward,” he said.

Veteran Leadership Will Be Key
With just three players returning from last season, veteran leadership will be particularly important as the Colts work to establish their identity.

Those returning players will be expected to help newcomers understand the program’s expectations while setting the tone through their work ethic, preparation and response to adversity.

Korah has also added players with strong leadership qualities during the offseason, giving Savage another group to lean on as the team develops.

“We’ll look to that group to set the standard through their preparation, work ethic, and how they respond to adversity,” Savage said.

Beyond their contributions on the ice, the veterans will also play an important role in creating an inclusive dressing room where younger players feel comfortable and connected.

For a team with so many new faces, building that sense of belonging could be just as important as developing chemistry during practices and games.

Speed and Defensive Additions Provide Encouragement
Although the Colts will feature a largely new lineup, Savage sees several encouraging signs in the team’s personnel.

The roster has gained speed, while the addition of a couple of strong defencemen should help strengthen the team’s defensive game.

Savage has also been pleased with the players’ work ethic during practices, an encouraging early indication as the team prepares for the demands of high school hockey.

“We’ve added some speed and have a couple of strong defencemen coming in, so there’s a lot to be excited about,” he said.

The transition to high school hockey can present challenges for newcomers, particularly when it comes to adjusting to the pace and physicality of the game. Savage believes the team’s willingness to work will provide a solid starting point.

The next step will be helping those players build confidence, understand their responsibilities and recognize how they can contribute to the team’s success.

While speed and defensive depth could become important strengths, consistency within the team’s systems remains an area of focus.

With so many new players learning to play together, the Colts will need time to develop a shared understanding of their responsibilities and learn to trust one another on the ice.

Team Chemistry and Accountability at the Forefront
For Savage, establishing chemistry will be one of the most important challenges during the opening weeks of the season.

The Colts will need to develop effective communication, understand their individual roles and ensure every player recognizes how their contributions affect the group.

“We’re emphasizing communication and making sure everyone understands how their role contributes to the team,” Savage said.

That process will extend beyond the rink, with the coaching staff encouraging players to support one another and build relationships that translate into stronger performances during games.

Savage believes trust develops through consistent effort and accountability, with players demonstrating every day that their teammates can depend on them.

The Colts will also need contributions throughout the lineup rather than relying on a handful of players to carry the team.

Buying into the systems, supporting the puck, maintaining discipline and taking care of individual responsibilities will all be essential as Korah looks to become a consistent and competitive team.

“If we can bring that team-first approach along with consistent effort and discipline, we’ll put ourselves in a good position to compete,” Savage said.

Carrying the Korah Tradition Forward
Despite the challenges that come with a new roster and a new coaching staff, the Colts have their sights set on competing for championships.

Savage understands that reaching those goals will require patience, commitment and steady improvement throughout the season. Rather than focusing solely on the final results, the team’s early emphasis will be on establishing the habits and culture necessary to compete against the area’s top high school programs.

For Savage, the opportunity to represent Korah is also about making the most of a season that will pass quickly for the players involved.

“My message to the players is to appreciate the opportunity to represent Korah and make the most of the season together,” he said. “It goes by quickly, and you want to look back knowing you gave everything you could for your teammates.”

He also hopes the Colts will give students, families and supporters plenty of reasons to be proud of the program.

The goal is to build a team that competes hard, plays for one another and represents the school with pride every time it takes the ice.

“Having that support in the rink means a lot to the players,” Savage said.

With a new bench boss, a retooled roster and championship aspirations, the Korah Colts will begin their 2026–2027 boys’ hockey season on Sunday, November 1, at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

As the team begins this new chapter, its progress will depend on how quickly the players come together, embrace their roles and turn their early commitment into consistent performances.

For Savage and the Colts, the mission is clear: build a strong team culture, honour the program’s tradition and put themselves in a position to compete for city and NOSSA championships.
