Soo 18U Black Sox Hold on to Win Doubleheader in Cheboygan Over the Chiefs

Coming off back to back losses in Traverse City, Michigan on May 2nd against the St Francis Gladiators, the Soo 18U Black Sox headed back into Michigan for a doubleheader in Cheboygan on May 6th to face the Cheboygan Varsity Chiefs.

The Soo survived the Chiefs with a 4-run lead in the sixth inning and then held off Cheboygan’s charge for an 8-7 victory on Wednesday. Cheboygan closed the gap by scoring on an error and an error.

The Soo’s Turco collected three hits in three at bats in the win. Turco singled in the sixth inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the fifth inning.

The Black Sox got on the board in the first inning after an error scored one run.

The Chiefs took the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the third thanks to singles by Schley, and Clark.

The Soo captured the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth after Cerasuolo singled down the left field line, and the Chiefs committed an error, each scoring one run.

Scornaiencki earned the win for the Black Sox. The reliever gave up three hits and four runs (one earned) over one and one-third innings, striking out one and walking one. Laway took the loss for Cheboygan. The pitcher went four innings, surrendering five runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out four and walking three. Carroll started the game for the Soo. The starter gave up four hits and two runs over three innings, striking out five and walking none. Turco collected the save. Palahnuk threw one inning of scoreless ball for the Black Sox in relief. The hurler allowed two hits, striking out one and walking two.

Keough drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Soo with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 1-for-2 on the day. Cond collected two hits for three at bats. Oliver paced the Black Sox with two walks.

Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up seven walks for the game. The Black Sox turned one double play in the game.

Clark, Schley, and Woolery each collected two hits for Cheboygan. Clark, Schley, McGovern, and Groya each drove in one run for the Chiefs Varsity. McGovern stole two bases. Cheboygan turned one double play in the game.

In game two double of the doubleheader on Wednesday evening, the Black Sox held onto win as Cheboygan almost erased a seven run deficit. The Soo got out to a 7-run lead in the first inning and held on for an 8-7 victory over the Chiefs. Cheboygan closed the gap by scoring on a single, a hit by pitch, a walk, a walk, a walk, a walk, and a walk.

The Black Sox jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Cond drew a walk, scoring one run, Scornaiencki grounded out, scoring two runs, Giallonardo drew a walk, scoring one run, an error scored two runs, and Cerasuolo singled, scoring one run.
The Soo added one run in the second. Scornaiencki hit a sacrifice fly, making the score 8-1.

Cheboygan scored five runs on one hit in the bottom of the third inning. Woolery was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Hudson drew a walk, scoring one run, Meldrum drew a walk, scoring one run, Hall drew a walk, scoring one run, and Schley drew a walk, scoring one run.

Turco earned the win for the Black Sox. The starting pitcher allowed three hits and one run (zero earned) over two innings, striking out one and walking none. Spies took the loss for the Chiefs. The hurler went four and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on four hits, striking out three and walking two. Schley opened the game for Cheboygan. The pitcher gave up zero hits and seven runs (six earned) over one-third of an inning, striking out none and walking seven. Cond collected the save. Keough and Oliver each appeared in relief for the Soo.

Scornaiencki drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Black Sox with two runs batted in. Cond went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Soo in hits. The Black Sox had a strong eye at the plate, piling up nine walks for the game. Cerasuolo and Carroll led the team with two free passes each. Cerasuolo stole two bases. The Soo were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Scornaiencki made the most plays with nine.

Clark, Schley, Groya, and Meldrum each collected one hit for the Chiefs. Clark, Schley, Hudson, Woolery, Hall, and Meldrum each drove in one run for Cheboygan. The Chiefs had a strong eye at the plate, amassing nine walks for the game. Schley, Hudson, and Meldrum led the team with two bases on balls each.

The Black Sox will be in action when they face the Newberry Varsity Indians in a doubleheader at 4:15 p.m and 6:15p.m in Newberry, Michigan on Friday, May 8th.
