After a 5 – 2 loss at home to the Sarnia Sting on Friday, January 27th, the fifth place (14-18-7-5) Soo Greyhounds hit the ice at the Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste Marie for an afternoon matinee against the first place (28-12-3-1) Windsor Spitfires in west division action.
In his 100th career OHL game 2:50 into the opening period, Greyhound forward Jordan D’Intino slides his 17th of the season for the opening goal of the contest under Spitfire goaltender Joey Costanzo with a backhand after a two on one with Alex Kostov to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead. With a cross ice pass from Michael Renwick, Windsor’s Brett Harrison fires a snapshot from the left faceoff circle through Greyhound netminder Samuel Ivanov’s five hole to pull the Spitfires even 1 – 1 at 3:04. Kalvyn Watson slides a pass between his legs off after winning the faceoff to Bryce McConnell-Baker in the left faceoff circle to rifle a slapshot over Costanzo’s catcher at 11:46 to give the hosts a 2 – 1 lead on McConnell-Baker’s 25th of the season. With a scramble in front of the Soo’s crease and the puck sitting loose, Liam Greentree slides the visitors second under Ivanov right pad to tie the game 2 – 2 at 12:22. Nicholas DeAnglis and Matthew Maggio notched the contributors on Greentree’s tying goal. Giving the Spitfires a 3 – 2 lead, Maggio catches a Jacob Maillet to lift a wrist shot from between the faceoff circle over Ivanov right shoulder at nineteen minutes even. Jacob Holmes drew the assist on Maggio’s goal. With seventeen seconds remaining in the period and standing all alone to the left of the Soo net, Maillet sinks Windsor’s fourth to send the Spitfires into the first intermission up 4 – 2. Maggio and Renwick set up Maillet’s goal.
Only 39 seconds into the middle stanza with a tunrover by Greyhound defenseman Kirill Kudryavstev, Harrison finds the back of the Soo net by lifting Windsor’s fifth over Ivanov’s blocker to increase the lead to 5 – 2, Maggio added the lone contributor on Harrison’s goal. Oliver Peer fires a pass to Alex Christopoulos in the right faceoff circle over Ivanov’s catcher at 1:51 to give the visitors lead to 6 – 2. Noah Morneau had the other assist on Windsor’s sixth of the game. Scoring an unassisted goal from the left corner, Liam Greentree finds the back of the Greyhound net over Ivanov’s catcher at 4:34. With the Soo on a powerplay at 14:06, D’Intino finds the back of Costanzo’s net for his second of the game off of rebound in front of the Spitfire net to bring the score to 7 – 3, Kalvyn Watson and Bryce McConnell-Baker registering the helpers on D’Intino’s sixth powerplay goal of the season.
Christopoulos redirects a rebound off of rookie Greyhound netminder Landon Miller’s left pad at 15:16 of the second unassisted to give the Spitfires an 8 – 3 lead. In his 100th appearance in a Greyhound jersey, Soo veteran Marco Mignosa closes the gap to four with his sixth of the season behind Costanzo at 5:08 of the third. Brenden Sirizotti and Ryan Thompson contributed on Mignosa’s goal. With 24 seconds remaining in the afternoon matinee and Windsor on a powerplay, former Greyhound defenseman Jacob Holmes rifles a slapshot from just inside the right blueline for his fourth of the season to give the Spitfires a 9 – 4 win. DeAngelis and James Jodoin notched the assists on Holmes’ powerplay marker. Windsor goaltender Joey Costanzo stopped 15 of 19 shots in the Spitfires win while Greyhound netminders Samuel Ivanov and Landon Miller combined to turn away a total of 42 shots with Ivanov stopping nine while Miller making 24 saves in the Soo’s 19th loss of the season.
The Greyhounds will be back in action for three games on the board with their first game in Windsor on February 2nd against the Spitfires in a 7:05 p.m start. Game two for the Soo will be on Friday, February 3rd when they meet the Sarnia Sting for a 7:05 p.m puck drop. Their final game of the road trip will be in Mississauga on Sunday, February 5th against the Steelheads in an 2:07 p.m afternoon matchup.
