Greyhounds Finish the 2026 NOHL AAA Showcase With a 3–1 Record After First League Loss of the Season

The Soo U15 Greyhounds wrapped up the 2026 NOHL AAA Showcase in Sturgeon Falls with an impressive 3–1 record, showcasing depth, resilience, and timely scoring across four games from February 6th through February 9th. The weekend featured statement wins over Sudbury, North Bay, and Timmins before a hard-fought loss to Thunder Bay in the finale.

In game one of the weekend on Friday, February 6th versus the Sudbury U15 Wolves, the Greyhounds opened the showcase with a 5–2 victory over the Sudbury Wolves. After a scoreless first period, the Soo broke through at 11:31 of the second when Lukas Maninos scored his 18th of the season, assisted by Gregory Beckerson. Just under six minutes later, Haydon Eby made it 2–0 with his 11th of the year, set up by Maninos.

Sudbury responded at 4:42, as Vince Tarini scored his eighth of the season with help from Emmit Deforge to cut the lead to one. The Greyhounds answered late in the period on the power play, with Dante Caruso scoring his 12th of the season at 0:25, assisted by Wyatt Jarrett, to restore a two-goal cushion.

In the third, Tarini struck again at 16:19 for his ninth of the season, assisted by Blake Bubalo, but the Soo sealed the win with goals from Gavyn Nevers at 9:12, assisted by Kadin Micomonaco, and Jeremy Jarratt at 2:55, scoring his second of the season unassisted. Carter Rome earned the win in goal, while Max Barros took the loss for Sudbury.

Game Two took place early Saturday morning when the Soo met the North Bay U15 Trappers with the Greyhounds continued their strong play with a dramatic 4–3 overtime win over North Bay. The Trappers opened the scoring at 7:47 of the first on the power play, with Kaleb Boucher netting his seventh of the season, assisted by Madden Larochelle and Elliot Farnsworth. The Soo answered in the final seconds of the period, as Matti Lappalainen tied the game at 0:09 with his 31st of the season, assisted by Jeremy Jarratt and Lukas Maninos.

North Bay regained the lead early in the second when Easton Assinewai scored his 10th of the year at 4:50, assisted by Larochelle and Johnny Langlois. Lappalainen responded again at 2:17, scoring his 32nd of the season unassisted to make it 2–2.

In the third, Gavyn Nevers gave the Soo their first lead at 3:45 with his 10th of the season, assisted by Bryce Perrott. North Bay forced overtime on a power-play goal by Johnny Langlois at 2:05, assisted by Kaleb Boucher and Madden Larochelle.

The Greyhounds completed the comeback in overtime, as Gregory Beckerson scored the game-winner at 1:02, assisted by Wyatt Jarrett. Ben Clayton picked up the win in goal, while Nash Hinksman took the loss for North Bay.

Three  hours later just before noon on Saturday, the Timmins Majors were the Greyhounds next opponents with entering their third contest with a 2–0 record, the Greyhounds kept rolling with a 5–2 win over the Timmins Majors. Timmins struck first on the power play at 8:26 of the opening period, with Jackson Duclos scoring his 11th of the season, assisted by Seamus Blain.

The Soo responded quickly. At 3:54, Haydon Eby tied the game with his 12th of the season, assisted by Jayden Fisher-Ruck. Just over a minute later, Wyatt Jarrett gave the Greyhounds a 2–1 lead with his 18th of the season, assisted by Jeremy Jarratt and Lukas Maninos.

Jasper Jarratt extended the lead at 13:55 of the second period, scoring his eighth of the season with an assist from Hayden Brason-Doan. Timmins cut into the lead with a shorthanded goal by Colton Lafreniere at 5:00, assisted by Preston Johnston.

The Greyhounds pulled away in the third, as Barrett McCabe scored his fifth of the season at 13:51, assisted by Kadin Micomonaco. Wyatt Jarrett capped off the scoring at 1:15 with his second of the game and 19th of the season, assisted by Matti Lappalainen. Carter Rome earned his second win of the showcase, while Benson Renaud was tagged with the loss.

In their fourth and final game on Sunday morning, the 3–0 Greyhounds were held scoreless in a 2–0 loss to the Thunder Bay Kings. After a scoreless first period, Thunder Bay opened the scoring on the power play at 9:35 of the second, with Ryder Milani netting his fifth of the season, assisted by Braeden Tenhunen and Cullen McCormack.

The Knights added an insurance goal at 4:44 of the third when Nolan Grennier scored his third of the season, assisted by Jesse Ukrainec. Declan Scott earned the shutout for Thunder Bay, while Ben Clayton made a strong effort in goal for the Soo.

Despite the loss, the Greyhounds finished the NOHL AAA Showcase with a strong 3–1 record. The Soo will now return to the road on the February 14th and 15th weekend for exhibition action against Upper Canada College, with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop on February 14th and a 2:30 p.m. start in Toronto on February 15th.
