Back to Back Wins in Doubleheader for the 18U Black Sox in Newberry Over the Bulldogs

On Tuesday, June 26th, the Soo 18U Black Sox crossed the border into Newberry, Michigan for a doubleheader matchup against the Newberry Varsity Bulldogs. Looking to build momentum, the Black Sox took to the diamond ready for a competitive night of baseball against their cross-border rivals.

Owen Nott drove in four runs on one hit to lead the Black Sox 18U past Newberry 22-3 on Wednesday in game one of the doubleheader. Nott doubled in the second scoring two, walked in the third scoring one, and walked in the fourth scoring one.

The Soo got on the board in the first inning after Jacob Scornaiencki singled, scoring one run.

The Black Sox scored seven runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. John Anthony Giallonardo drew a walk, scoring one run, Gabriel Marrelli drew a walk, scoring one run, Nott doubled, scoring two runs, Aaron Keough singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, and a wild pitch scored one run.

The Black Sox added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Nott walked, Keough was struck by a pitch, Scornaiencki walked, and Logan Rohe walked, each scoring one run.

The Soo scored ten runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. Bryson Palahnuk singled, scoring one run, Marrelli drew a walk, scoring one run, Nott drew a walk, scoring one run, Keough drew a walk, scoring one run, Scornaiencki drew a walk, scoring one run, Rohe drew a walk, scoring one run, a wild pitch scored one run, Jakson Carroll singled, scoring one run, Noah Golden drew a walk, scoring one run, and Depew induced Giallonardo to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.

Rohe earned the win for the Black Sox. The starting pitcher gave up zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out two and walking one. Schroeder took the loss for the Bulldogs. The starting pitcher went one inning, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out none and walking two. Carroll tossed two innings of zero-run ball for the Soo in relief. The hurler gave up two hits, striking out two and walking none.

The Black Sox piled up 11 hits in the game. Palahnuk, the Soo’s number nine hitter, led the team with three hits in three at-bats. Giallonardo and Carroll each collected multiple hits for the Soo. Marrelli led the Black Sox with four walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing 19 walks for the game. The Soo were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Keough made the most plays with six.

Woodall, Kitzman, Sevarns, and Dewitt each collected one hit for Newberry. Woodall went 1-for-1 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in.

After their 22-3 game one win in Newberry over the Bulldogs, the Black Sox claimed victory over Newberry. The Soo were triumphant over Newberry High School 7-4 on Wednesday at Newberry.

A single by Jakson Carroll put the Black Sox on the board in the top of the first.

Depew stole home, which helped Newberry to tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.

The Soo took the lead, 4-1, in the top of the second thanks to singles by Zach Allard, and Owen Nott.

The Black Sox added two runs in the third. Henry Currie singled down the right field line, making the score 6-1.

Jacob Scornaiencki earned the win for the Soo. The hurler allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking two. Kitzman took the loss for the Bulldogs. The starter went two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits, striking out none and walking four. Currie opened the game for the Black Sox. The starting pitcher gave up zero hits and one run (zero earned) over two innings, striking out three and walking one. Ty Cond collected the save.

Number nine hitter, Currie, showed the depth of the Black Sox’s lineup, by leading them with two hits in two at bats. Allard led the Soo with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-2 on the day. Richard Cond paced the Black Sox with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game.

Navarro, Newberry’s number eight hitter, led the team with two hits in two at-bats. Schroeder, Navarro, and Stilson each drove in one run for the Bulldogs.

The Black Sox will return to Michigan to face the St Francis Varsity Gladiators in Traverse City for a doubleheader on Saturday, June 2nd.
