On Wednesday, July 8, the Soo 18U Black Sox crossed the St. Mary’s River into Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, for a midweek doubleheader against the E.U.P. Wood Ducks. The twin bill provided another valuable opportunity for the Black Sox to continue their development while competing against strong cross-border opposition.
The Black Sox easily dispatched Wood Ducks on Wednesday, 13-2.
The Soo got on the board in the first inning after Thomas Keough doubled, scoring two runs.
The Black Sox added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after J.A Giallonardo singled down the right field line, Tye Turco hit a sacrifice fly, Bryson Palahnuk walked, and Lucas Carriere singled to right field, each scoring one run.
The Soo added one run in the third. Chase Cerasuolo stole home, making the score 7-1.
Logan Rohe earned the win for the Black Sox. The hurler gave up two hits and one run over two innings, striking out one and walking one. Jonathan Schupp took the loss for the Wood Ducks. The right-handed pitcher went two innings, surrendering six runs on five hits, striking out one and walking three. Henry Currie pitched one inning of scoreless ball for the Black Sox in relief. The pitcher surrendered two hits, striking out one and walking none.
The Soo piled up 12 hits in the game. Carriere, Palahnuk, Keough, Giallonardo, and Richard Cond each collected two hits for the Black Sox. Keough and Giallonardo each drove in three runs for the Black Sox. Cerasuolo led the Soo with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, piling up six walks for the game. SooBlackSox 18U turned one double play in the game. The Black Sox didn’t commit a single error in the field. Palahnuk had the most chances in the field with five.
Number seven hitter, Michael Morse, showed the depth of E.U.P’s lineup, by leading them with two hits in two at bats. Boo Hibbard and Morse each drove in one run for the Wood Ducks. The E.U.P turned one double play in the game.
In game two of the evening, the Woodducks looked to even the score with the possibility of winning the second game of the doubleheader, but Black Sox were victorious against the Wood Ducks 9-4.
The Soo got on the board in the top of the second inning after Owen Nott singled to right field, and J.A Giallonardo stole home, each scoring one run.
A double by Bryson Palahnuk extended the Black Sox lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning.
Jacob Scornaiencki earned the win for the Soo. The starting pitcher gave up zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out none and walking one. Ryker Medrick took the loss for the E.U.P. The hurler went one-third of an inning, surrendering four runs (one earned) on zero hits, striking out one and walking four. Mack Kavanaugh led things off on the hill for E.U.P Wood Ducks Over 18. The starter allowed four hits and three runs over two and one-third innings, striking out two and walking three. Chase Cerasuolo threw one inning of no-run ball for the Black Sox in relief. The reliever allowed zero hits, striking out none and walking two.
Tye Turco, Palahnuk, and Nott each collected two hits for the Soo. Palahnuk and Nott each drove in two runs for the Black Sox. Aaron Keough paced the Soo with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting 12 walks for the game.
Boo Hibbard, Kavanaugh, Gabe Bontrager, Levi Mayer, Isaak Morrison, and Jones each collected one hit for the Wood Ducks. Hibbard, Bontrager, and Morrison each drove in one run for the E.U.P. Jones stole two bases. The Wood Ducks turned two double plays in the game.
The Wood Ducks and Black Sox will face one another again on Friday, July 10th in a 2:00 p.m opening pitch.
