The Superior Heights Steelhawks turned in a dominant performance Thursday afternoon, combining a relentless ground attack with a stifling defensive effort to defeat the White Pines Wolverines 37-0 in Sault Ste. Marie Junior High School Football action at Superior Heights.
Entering the contest with a 2-1 record, the Steelhawks wasted little time establishing control against the winless Wolverines, who came into the matchup at 0-3.
Superior Heights opened the scoring at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter when quarterback Brydan Wootton connected with Kymani Perrault-Dedier on a two-yard pass. Perrault-Dedier then took the ball into the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown, giving the Steelhawks an early 6-0 lead.
Wootton added the two-point conversion himself, rushing the ball into the Wolverines’ end zone to make it 8-0.
The Steelhawks continued to find success on the ground as Noah Lesyshen broke loose for an eight-yard touchdown run. Ben Campbell added the convert at 3:53 of the opening quarter, extending the Superior Heights advantage to 15-0.
The Steelhawks’ offensive pressure continued just moments later.
At 9:54 of the first quarter, Raymond Love broke away for a 75-yard touchdown run, giving Superior Heights another major and pushing the lead to 21-0. Campbell once again connected on the conversion to make it 22-0.
With just 28.4 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Taitum Rushon added to the Steelhawks’ offensive outburst with a 13-yard touchdown carry. Campbell’s convert made it 29-0, capping a first quarter in which Superior Heights found the end zone four times.
The Steelhawks carried their commanding advantage into the second half, while the Wolverines were unable to generate any points against the Superior Heights defence.
Superior Heights added its final points of the afternoon at 7:40 of the third quarter. This time it was Campbell who found the end zone, carrying the ball 10 yards for a touchdown. Campbell then converted his own major, bringing the final score to 37-0.
The shutout marked a complete performance for the Steelhawks, who controlled the scoreboard from the opening quarter and kept White Pines off the board throughout the contest.
With the victory, Superior Heights moves to 3-1 on the junior football season, while White Pines falls to 0-4.
Looking Ahead
The Wolverines will look to get into the win column when they return to action on October 8, taking on the Korah Colts in a 5:30 p.m kickoff.
The Steelhawks will be back on the field the following day, October 9, when they face the St. Mary’s Knights. That game is scheduled for a 4:45 p.m kickoff.
For Superior Heights, Thursday’s 37-0 victory provides plenty of momentum heading into the matchup with St. Mary’s, while White Pines will look to regroup ahead of its October 8th meeting with Korah.
