The final game of the 2026 Ontario Football Conference regular season will bring together the top two teams in the standings as the first-place Sault College Cougars travel to Windsor to take on the second-place St. Clair Saints on Saturday, October 3rd.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with the undefeated Cougars entering the matchup with a perfect 7-0 record, while the Saints sit at 6-1.
It is a matchup between two of the OFC’s top teams, but there is also plenty of history behind the game.
The Saints are the 2025 OFC defending champions and have established themselves as one of the conference’s most consistent programs. However, their only loss this season came against Sault College when the Cougars dominated St. Clair 42-15 in their September 5th meeting in Sault Ste. Marie.
Now, nearly a month later, the Cougars will head into Saints territory looking to finish the regular season undefeated.
For Sault College head coach Paul Orazietti, the first meeting provided plenty of information about what his team can expect in Windsor — but he also knows the Saints are more than capable of turning the tables.
“We’ve learned that they are a very good team capable of beating us if we are not super prepared,” Orazietti said. “They have a very strong D line and athletes across the board, especially at receiver.”
Orazietti also pointed to the Saints’ remarkable consistency as a program.
“They have been undefeated for the last six seasons for a reason and we know we’ll have our hands full playing on their field.”
Battle in the Trenches
One of the biggest storylines heading into Saturday’s game will be the battle along the line of scrimmage.
The Saints have one of the strongest defensive lines in the OFC, led by defensive standout Chris Rivero, who has recorded 10.5 quarterback sacks this season. St. Clair’s Hunter Hall has added another 6.5 sacks.
For Orazietti, the matchup may ultimately come down to which team controls the trenches.
“Their D line is the strength of their team — the great pass rushers as well as run stoppers,” he said. “Just like our first matchup, whoever wins the trenches will win the game.”
The numbers back up the importance of the Saints’ defensive front.
St. Clair has allowed just 115 points through seven games, the lowest total in the OFC. Sault College, meanwhile, has scored a conference-leading 324 points, making the battle between the Cougars’ offense and the Saints’ defense one of the game’s most intriguing matchups.
Cougars Continue to Produce Offensively
Sault College’s undefeated season has been built on balance and production from throughout the roster.
The Cougars have scored 324 points, averaging more than 46 points per game, while allowing 129.
Running back Sam Mustaspha has been one of the biggest offensive weapons in the conference. He enters the final regular-season game with 82 carries for 948 yards and a conference-leading 11 touchdowns.
He is joined in the Cougar rushing attack by Jayden Ralph, who has 55 carries for 428 yards, while Emerson Peterkin has contributed 224 rushing yards on only 17 carries.
Peterkin has also been a major factor through the air.
The Sault College quarterback has completed 109 of 163 passes for 1,573 yards, providing the Cougars with another dimension offensively.
One of his key targets has been Rylan Varcoe, who has 20 receptions for an impressive 425 yards and six touchdowns.
Jaiden Trudeau has also provided a reliable receiving option with 22 catches for 288 yards.
The Cougars’ scoring attack has also received major contributions from Nik Vecchio, who has connected on 10 field goals, while Mustaspha leads the team with 11 touchdowns. Varcoe and Nick Jokic have each added six touchdowns.
Saints Bring Their Own Offensive Weapons
While St. Clair may have been held to 15 points in the first meeting, the Saints have put together a strong offensive season overall.
They have scored 233 points through seven games and feature several players capable of creating problems for the Cougar defense.
Quarterback George Arbez has completed 40 of 81 passes for 561 yards while also contributing 305 rushing yards on 39 carries.
St. Clair’s rushing attack also features Jake Schuh, who has 332 yards on 54 carries, and Peyton Harris, who has 310 yards on 37 carries.
Through the air, Ben Heath leads the Saints with 22 receptions for 292 yards.
Special teams could also play a significant role, with St. Clair’s Nate Carter, a player from Sault Ste. Marie, leading the OFC in punting with 45 punts for 1,709 yards.
Defence Could Decide the Game
While the offensive numbers attract plenty of attention, both teams have demonstrated that they can win games defensively.
St. Clair’s Rivero has been a major disruptive force with 10.5 sacks, while Hunter Hall has added 6.5.
For Sault College, Ethan Carchidi has recorded six quarterback sacks, with George Limb adding four.
The Saints also have several productive tacklers, including Christian Barsic, who has recorded 19 tackles and one assisted tackle, while Russell Beaubrun has 18 tackles and four assisted tackles.
Tylin Davis has contributed 13 tackles and four assisted tackles, while Rivero has 14 tackles and nine assisted tackles to go along with his impressive sack total.
Staying Focused on the Process
Despite entering the game with a perfect 7-0 record, Orazietti said the Cougars are not changing their approach.
Rather than focusing on protecting an undefeated record, the team continues to concentrate on preparation and execution.
“We focus on our process just like we have all year long and don’t discuss anything beyond that,” Orazietti explained.
“We focus on every small detail in preparations for the games in terms of how to play our best games rather than the win itself. Winning is a byproduct of doing things the right way.”
That approach will be tested against a St. Clair team that has had several weeks to prepare for the rematch.
Both teams are expected to make adjustments from their first meeting, but Orazietti believes the game will ultimately come down to execution and personnel.
“I think both teams will have some adjustments for this game but ultimately it’s going to be personnel that determines who wins and how well we execute.”
One Final Test Before the Postseason
With the regular season coming to an end, Saturday’s game also represents an important opportunity for Sault College to prepare for the postseason.
For Orazietti, the objective is straightforward.
“Playing our best game of the season is our sole focus heading into the post season and if we do that I’m confident that the score will take care of itself.”
The Cougars have already proven they can beat the Saints, but Saturday’s contest presents an entirely different challenge.
This time, Sault College will be playing on St. Clair’s home field, against a Saints team that has been one of the OFC’s dominant programs for years and has plenty of motivation following its 42-15 loss earlier this season.
For the Cougars, it is an opportunity to complete an undefeated regular season.
For the Saints, it is an opportunity to show how much they have changed since the first meeting.
And for both teams, it is one final test before the OFC postseason begins.
The top two teams in the conference will meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m in Windsor, with the Cougars looking to take their 7-0 record one step further and the Saints looking to close out their regular season with a statement against the team that handed them their only loss.
