The Superior Heights Steelhawks delivered a dominant performance on Wednesday, January 7th, skating to a convincing win over the St. Mary’s Knights in a midweek Sault Ste. Marie Girls High School Hockey League matchup at the Rankin Arena. The Steelhawks set the tone early and never looked back, building a commanding lead through speed, depth, and relentless pressure.
Superior Heights wasted little time opening the scoring, as Grace Curran netted her sixth goal of the season at 10:12 of the first period, with Zara Zavoral picking up the assist. Just 13 seconds later, Zavoral added one of her own, finishing a play set up by Fiona Prophet to make it 2–0. The Steelhawks continued their first-period surge at 9:27 when Alexe Villebrun capitalized on a feed from Curran, extending the lead to 3–0 by the first intermission.
The momentum carried into the second period, where Ava Mount increased the advantage to 4–0 at 4:47, converting a setup from Lillian Rumiel. Late in the frame, Villebrun struck again, scoring her second of the night and 14th of the season at 0:53, with Alana Johnstone credited with the assist, giving Superior Heights a commanding 5–0 lead heading into the third.
St. Mary’s found the scoresheet early in the final period on the powerplay, as Riley Archambault recorded her first goal of the season at 7:10, assisted by Taylor Nieson. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly shut down when Curran responded at 5:39, scoring her second of the game and seventh of the season off a pass from Rumiel to restore the five-goal cushion.
Kaydence Wardell earned the win in goal for the Steelhawks, turning aside the Knights’ chances with a steady performance, while Natalia McDonald and Alex Lepore shared netminding duties for St. Mary’s in the loss.
The Steelhawks will look to keep their momentum rolling when they return to action on January 12th against the CASS Huskies. Meanwhile, the Knights aim to rebound on January 14th when they face the Korah Colts. Both matchups are set for 2:30 p.m. puck drops at the Rankin Arena.
