The Sault College Cougars will finally return home for their 2026 home opener on Saturday, August 22nd, as the defending OFC contenders look to build on an impressive opening-week victory.
The Cougars, who enter Saturday’s CJFL Ontario Football Conference matchup with a 1-0 record, will host the 0-1 Quinte Riptides at Superior Heights in Sault Ste. Marie. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Sault College opened its second-ever OFC season on August 15th in Burlington, Ontario, overcoming the Hamilton Hurricanes for a 40-22 victory. After facing adversity early in the contest, the Cougars continued to battle and eventually pulled away late to secure their first win of the 2026 campaign.
Head coach Paul Orazietti credited his players for sticking with the plan and continuing to believe in one another when the game was on the line.
“The guys just stuck with the game plan and maintained a belief in each other and started making plays when it mattered late in the game,” Orazietti said.
After a successful inaugural season and now beginning Year Two with a victory, the Cougars have plenty of reason to be confident heading into their first home game. However, Orazietti knows there is still plenty of work to do.
“It’s always nice to start the season with a win but by the same token we know every game in this league is going to be a battle this year,” he said. “We still have a lot to improve on and a lot of mistakes that we made last week that we need to clean up.”
Rather than looking too far ahead, the Cougars are focused on continuing to improve each week.
“We’re just looking forward to trying to get better this week and not worrying too much about who we play week in and week out,” Orazietti added.
Standing in the way of a 2-0 start will be a Quinte Riptides team looking to bounce back from a difficult opening weekend.
The Riptides enter Saturday’s matchup at 0-1 following a 22-3 loss to the London Beefeaters in Belleville, Ontario. Despite the opening-week defeat, Orazietti says the Cougars are expecting a much-improved Quinte squad and know they cannot afford to overlook their opponent.
“We know that they are much improved from last year and they have a good coaching staff,” Orazietti said. “More importantly, if we’re not ready to play, they have the ability to beat us without question.”
Orazietti also pointed to the Riptides’ defense as an area the Cougars will have to be prepared for.
“They’re solid all the way around and have a very dynamic defense that will force us to be efficient on the offensive side of the ball,” he said.
For the Cougars, Saturday’s game is about more than simply trying to improve to 2-0. It marks the first opportunity for the Sault College program to play in front of its home supporters during the 2026 season.
After beginning the season on the road, the Cougars are looking forward to bringing OFC football back to Sault Ste. Marie and giving local fans their first look at the 2026 team.
Orazietti is hoping the community responds with strong support in the stands.
“I’m hoping we can see packed bleachers on Saturday and that we are able to provide the local fans with some great, exciting, error-free football from the home team,” he said.
With a 1-0 record, an explosive 40-point performance in Week One and plenty of excitement surrounding Year Two of the program, the Cougars will look to make their home debut a memorable one.
The Quinte Riptides, meanwhile, will be looking to spoil the celebration and earn their first victory of the season.
Kickoff between the Sault College Cougars and Quinte Riptides is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, at Superior Heights in Sault Ste. Marie.
