Coming off a three-game opening weekend on the road against the Humber Hawks, the Sault College Cougars returned to southern Ontario on September 12 and 13 for another demanding three-game weekend, this time taking on the Sheridan Bruins.
The Cougars showed plenty of offensive production throughout the weekend, including a 13-run performance in game two, but ultimately came away from the three games still searching for their first win of the 2026 OCAA men’s baseball season.
Game One: Sheridan 7, Sault College 6
The Cougars opened the weekend on Saturday with a closely contested 7-6 loss to the Sheridan Bruins.
Cayson Tremblay led the way offensively for Sault College, going 4-for-4 with a run scored, four hits and an RBI. Kolton Tremblay also produced a strong performance at the plate, recording two hits, two RBIs and a run in four at-bats.
Josh Cooney contributed a hit, a run and an RBI, while John Gignac added a hit, an RBI and a run. Michael Starzomski and Olavi Ojanpera each recorded a hit, with Starzomski going 1-for-3.
Ben Weatherbee also crossed the plate for the Cougars.
On the mound, Brennan West faced 26 batters, while Ryan Tays faced seven as Sault College battled the Bruins in a one-run game.
Despite the offensive contributions, Sheridan held on for the 7-6 victory.
Game Two: Sheridan 20, Sault College 13
The Cougars and Bruins met again later Saturday for the second game of the day, with the two teams combining for 33 runs in a high-scoring contest.
Sault College’s offence came alive, producing 13 runs, led by an outstanding performance from Kolton Tremblay.
Tremblay went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs, continuing his productive weekend offensively.
Cayson Scotland also put together an impressive offensive showing, collecting five hits in three at-bats. Jayce Prgomet recorded a run and an RBI, while Ryan Leighton added a run and two RBIs.
Gabriel Eichmann contributed two hits, two RBIs and a run, while Brooks Aylward scored twice and added a hit. Lucas Diberardino also crossed the plate for the Cougars.
The Cougars’ 13-run offensive performance, however, was matched by an even larger output from Sheridan, as the Bruins scored 20 runs to secure the victory.
Olavi Ojanpera faced 19 batters in relief, followed by John Gignac, who faced 18, and Frankie Buda, who faced eight.
Game Three: Sheridan Completes Weekend Sweep
The Cougars closed out the weekend Sunday against Sheridan, with the Bruins completing the three-game sweep.
Sault College continued to receive contributions from several players at the plate.
Gabriel Eichmann, Kolton Tremblay and Jayce Prgomet each recorded a hit, while Josh Cooney added a hit and an RBI.
Brooks Aylward collected a hit and drove in a run, while Olavi Ojanpera finished with a hit and an RBI.
Eichmann also took the mound for the Cougars, facing 28 batters in the final game of the weekend.
While Sault College was unable to secure a victory, the three-game set provided another opportunity for the Cougars to gain valuable experience early in the season against OCAA competition.
Cougars Return Home for Season Opener
With six games now in the books, the Cougars will return to Sault Ste. Marie for their highly anticipated 2026 season home opener.
Sault College, now 0-6 on the season, will host the 4-2 Durham Lords on September 19 and 20.
After opening the season with six games on the road, the Cougars will finally have the opportunity to play in front of their home fans as they look to get into the win column and begin building momentum on home soil.
The four-game home-opening weekend against Durham will provide the Cougars with another important test as they continue their 2026 OCAA campaign.
