The 2026 Ontario Power Five Football League season officially kicked off on Saturday, May 23rd, as the Sault Steelers traveled east to the James Jerome Sports Complex to battle the Sudbury Spartans in both clubs’ season opener.
Despite flashes of offensive momentum from the Steelers, the Spartans capitalized on key turnovers and timely scoring drives to secure a 30-8 victory on home turf.
Sudbury wasted little time setting the tone early in the opening quarter. With 11:30 remaining in the first, the Spartans struck first with a 29-yard touchdown pass to jump ahead 6-0. The successful convert extended the lead to 7-0 for the hosts.
The Spartans continued to apply pressure midway through the quarter when Sudbury intercepted Steelers quarterback #14 deep in Sault territory. The turnover proved costly as the Spartans returned the interception 68 yards into the endzone. Following another successful convert, Sudbury held a commanding 14-0 advantage with 4:44 left in the opening frame.
The Steelers answered quickly.
Just 26 seconds later, Steelers standout Ronan Provenzano electrified the offense with a highlight-reel run. Breaking through multiple tackles near midfield, Provenzano sprinted 70 yards to the endzone to put the Steelers on the board. After the successful convert, the Sault cut the deficit to 14-7 and regained momentum heading into the remainder of the half.
In the second quarter, Sudbury restored control of the game. With 10:55 remaining before halftime, the Spartans powered through the Steelers defensive front from the three-yard line for another major score. The convert was successful, pushing the Sudbury lead to 21-7.
Defence dominated much of the second half as both clubs struggled to generate sustained offensive drives.
The Steelers managed to add to the scoreboard in the fourth quarter after Sudbury conceded a safety, trimming the deficit to 21-9.
However, the Spartans sealed the victory late in regulation. With 2:31 remaining, Sudbury broke loose for a 25-yard rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 27-9 before adding the convert for a 28-9 cushion.
In the final 94 seconds of play, the Steelers conceded a two-point safety, closing out the contest with Sudbury earning a 30-8 victory to open the 2026 campaign.
The Steelers will now return home to Sault Ste. Marie looking to regroup ahead of their home opener against the Sarnia Imperials at Rocky DiPietro Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Spartans will prepare for another tough test next weekend when they face the Tri City Outlaws at the University of Guelph also set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
