Sabercats Set for U16 ‘AA’ Playoff Clash with Top-Seeded York Lions

The road to an Ontario Summer Football League championship begins this Saturday for the Sault Sabercats.

The fourth-seeded Sabercats (4-1-2) will travel to Aurora, Ontario, on Saturday, July 11, to take on the top-seeded York Lions (6-1) in the opening round of the 2026 U16 ‘AA’ OSFL Playoffs. Kickoff will take place at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School in what promises to be one of the marquee matchups of the quarterfinal round.

York enters the playoffs as the league’s highest-ranked team after finishing the regular season with a 6-1 record. The Lions showcased one of the most explosive offenses in the province, scoring 223 points while allowing 80 against.

The Sabercats finished fourth with a unique 4-1-2 record. Sault scored 175 points during the regular season while boasting one of the league’s stingiest defenses, surrendering just 57 points in seven games.

The Sabercats’ record includes two ties that were awarded after scheduled road opponents were forced to cancel their home games. Under league rules, Sault received six points in the standings for each cancelled contest. Their only on-field loss came on July 4 in Sudbury against the Spartans. Despite both teams enjoying strong regular seasons, the Sabercats and Lions did not meet during the 2026 schedule, adding another layer of intrigue to Saturday’s playoff showdown.

Sabercats head coach Monico says the team has turned the page and is fully focused on the challenge ahead.

“We have moved on and are now fully focused on preparing for York,” said Monico. “The ties and last week’s loss are behind us—they are part of the journey that has brought us to this point and helped shape where we are today.”

The coach knows his team will be facing one of the league’s toughest opponents.

“York is a strong football team. They run the ball extremely well and are a very sound team in all areas. We know we will need to be at our best, and we expect to be at our best.”

For the Sabercats, success begins in the trenches.

“For us to be successful, we need to establish the run game and have our offensive line play to the level we know they are capable of. We have complete confidence in that group and trust them to deliver.”

Monico also expressed confidence in his defense, which has been among the best in the OSFL all season.

“Defensively, we have full faith in our unit. They have been outstanding all season, and we know they will be ready for the challenge.”

With a championship still within reach, the Sabercats are embracing the opportunity that comes with postseason football.

“It’s playoff football, and we are excited for the opportunity ahead.”

With the regular season complete, records and rankings no longer matter. The Sabercats will look to rise to the occasion against the league’s top seed as they begin their quest for an 2026 OSFL U16 ‘AA’ championship on Saturday in Aurora.
