The Sault Sabercats and Brampton Bulldogs will both enter Saturday’s Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) AAA contest with the same goal in mind — earning their first win of the 2026 season.
The Sabercats return to the field on June 20th looking to bounce back from a difficult 45-7 loss to the visiting Cornwall Wildcats on June 13th in Sault Ste. Marie. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are also searching for their first victory after suffering a 61-12 defeat at the hands of the first-place Kingston Grenadiers last weekend in Brampton.
Despite the early-season setbacks, Sabercats head coach Cody Wheten believes his team continues to grow and improve each week.
“It’s as important as the previous week’s,” said Wheten when discussing Saturday’s matchup. “Every game we need to be focused and deliver our best for any team that steps on our home turf. We will have a big undertaking as every team is a new challenge.”
While the scoreboard has not reflected the effort put forth by the Sabercats so far this season, Wheten says one of the team’s biggest strengths has been its ability to persevere through adversity.
“I think the biggest improvement is our ability to fight through adversity and put 100 percent effort into every play, regardless of the score or situation,” said Wheten. “These guys are really tough, mentally and physically.”
The Bulldogs may enter the game without a win, but Wheten isn’t taking anything for granted.
“I’ll keep these things internal. Just know they are a good team with athletes all over, and their record doesn’t mean anything when we touch the field. We will give them our all for 60 minutes.”
One aspect that continues to impress the Sabercats coaching staff is the resilience and competitive spirit displayed by the players.
“They live for football and it shows,” said Wheten. “When you’re a real competitor, the last play doesn’t matter until you can reflect on it in film. They have short-term memory loss for the mess ups and try to make it up on the next play.”
That mentality has helped build a strong bond throughout the Sabercats roster.
“The team is tight-knit and we play for each other,” Wheten added. “You can really tell they care about each other, and it shows in practice, film, games, and outside of Sabercats.”
With both teams eager to put their first win in the standings, Saturday’s matchup promises to be an important early-season contest. The Sabercats will look to feed off their home crowd and turn their hard work into results, while the Bulldogs will arrive in Sault Ste. Marie equally determined to leave with a victory.
Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, June 20th, as two hungry teams battle for their first OSFL AAA win of the 2026 season. The Sabercats versus Bulldogs will be broadcast on Saultsports TV with a 3:45 p.m pregame and a 4:00 p.m kickoff.
