The Sault Sabercats hit the road for their quarter-final Ontario Varsity Football League game on Saturday July 26th at 7:00 p.m in Mississauga, Ontario. The Sabercats entered the 2014 OVFL playoffs with a 5 – 3 record while the Mississauga Warriors hit the field with a 5 – 3 record also.
The Sabercats opened the game with a 1 – 0 score on the opening kick-off with a Sabercat touchback. At 9:28 of the first quarter, the Warriors took a 7 – 1 lead with their first touchdown of the quarter-final. At 5:31 of the first quarter, David Toppan gave the Sault a 8 – 7 lead. With time ticking down in the first quarter, Mississauga jumped out to a 14 – 8 lead with 45 seconds left.
The Sault Steelers were in Toronto, Ontario to face the Toronto Raiders in their final regular season game on July 26th at 7:00 p.m. The first place West division Steelers were looking to improve on their 6 – 1 record while the Raiders had a 3 - 4 going into the last game of the Northern Football Conference regular season.
Josh Gauthier opened the scoring for the Steelers with a 3 yard run to give the Sault an 7 – 0 lead. On the Raiders one yard line, Gauthier ran the ball one yard into Toronto's end zone to bring the game to 14 – 0 for the Steelers. With a 20 yard run, the NFC West division leaders increased their lead to 21 – 0 with Gauthier's third touchdown of the game heading into halftime.
Earlier today, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning on Thursday July 24th that the NHL club has signed centre Jared McCann to an entry-level contract with the club.
The London, Ontario product was selected in the 1st Round (24th overall) of this past June's NHL Entry Draft by the Canucks.
"All of our players are working towards earning an NHL contract and to see Jared accomplish that makes us very happy as an organization and we are thrilled for him and his family" began Greyhounds Head Coach Sheldon Keefe.

Most rushing touchdowns in a Northern Football Conference season goes to Josh Gauthier of the Sault crossed the goal line 4 times versus the Ottawa Invaders and has upped his season total to 28. This surpasses the mark of 25 that he set last season.
One more touchdown would set the most touchdowns in a season with Gauthier co-holding this mark with Dan McAlonan at 25 and Dan set while with the Hamilton Wildcats back in 1995. Gauthier still has one more game to add to this mark versus the Toronto Raiders this week.
