March 11, 2026 marks a major milestone for Saultsports as we celebrate fifteen years of dedicated coverage of youth, high school, and collegiate athletics across Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma, and Northern Ontario. What began in 2011 with the purchase of Saultsports.com has grown into one of the region’s leading independent sports media platforms — built on a simple belief: our athletes deserve the spotlight.
Saultsports was created to showcase and promote the incredible talent competing in our local arenas, football fields, baseball diamonds, gymnasiums, and curling rinks. Over the years, as positive media coverage for amateur athletics declined, we remained committed to filling that gap. From 2011 to 2016, owner Jay Houslander operated Saultsports part-time while working full-time elsewhere — dedicating evenings and weekends to on-location coverage throughout the region. In 2016, with the support of his family, Houslander made the decision to pursue Saultsports full-time — a turning point that accelerated the platform’s growth.
That same year marked the launch of Saultsports TV, expanding coverage into live broadcasting. Early broadcasts included the Guy Vetrie Basketball Tournaments, Sault College basketball, and high school athletics. In 2018, the Algoma Thunderbirds partnered with Saultsports as their official broadcast provider for men’s and women’s basketball and soccer. Soon after, the Soo U16 and U18 Greyhound AAA hockey programs along OFSAA Wrestling, OUA Wrestling Championships, Dudley Hewitt CJHL Cups joined as streaming partners, further strengthening the network’s presence in elite youth sports.
Growth continued in 2025 when Sault College selected Saultsports as the broadcast crew for its inaugural Canadian Junior Football League home season. Over the years, Saultsports has also been entrusted with coverage of the Soo Greyhounds OHL preseason during the COVID-19 outbreak and Skate Ontario competitions hosted in Sault Ste. Marie — reinforcing its reputation for reliable, professional live production.
In the fall of 2025, parent company TruHous Media expanded further by launching a dedicated sports internet radio station. While still in its early stages, the platform is set to become the home of Northern Ontario sports broadcasting in the fall of 2026.
For fifteen years, Saultsports has remained committed to giving local athletes the exposure they deserve — and with the continued support of the community, partners, and sponsors, the next chapter promises to be even bigger.
Here’s to many more years of celebrating Northern Ontario sports.
