Varsity Sabercats Dominate Wolverines to Open 2025 OSFL Season in Peterborough

Over the weekend of Friday, May 16th and Saturday, May 17th, the Sault Varsity Sabercats opened their 2025 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) season in commanding fashion with a dominant 35–1 victory over the Peterborough Wolverines.

Veteran running back Nathan Guizzetti led the charge for the Sabercats, punching in two rushing touchdowns to set the tone early. Quarterback Matti Tucker added to the offensive outburst by connecting with Nate Carter for a passing touchdown. The ground game continued to shine as Payton Mechiorre and Ethan Serrao each added rushing scores in the Saturday matchup.

Carter continued to contribute on special teams, successfully converting three extra point kicks. The Sabercats also added a two-point conversion, with Rene Levesque making the grab from Tucker to round out the scoring in a complete team performance.

Sabercat coach Jamie Antonello told Saultsports that “we moved the ball efficiently on offense and controlled the tempo. Defense was EXCELLENT, we swarmed their quarterback and put constant pressure on their passing game. Specials looked crisp for week one, we had a few big punt returns and controlled field position for the most part. Lots of good things to build off of and also lots to learn from and improve heading into week two.“

With the win, the Sabercats start the season 1–0 and look to carry their momentum into Week Two. They’ll be back on the road on Saturday, May 24th, when they travel to Clarington to take on the Knights in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
