The Sault Sabercats return home to Superior Heights Field on Saturday, June 13, looking to earn their first victory of the 2026 Ontario Summer Football League U18 season when they host the Cornwall Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m as the seventh-place Sabercats (0-4) welcome the fifth-place Wildcats (2-2) to Sault Ste. Marie.
Cornwall enters the contest with a .500 record after opening the season with a convincing 34-14 win over the Brampton Bulldogs. The Wildcats then suffered back-to-back setbacks, falling 44-0 to the Kingston Grenadiers and 13-9 to the Myers Riders before rebounding in Week 4 despite a 33-15 loss to the Cumberland Panthers. Their record places them firmly in the middle of the league standings as they look to climb higher heading into the second half of the season.
For the Sabercats, the record may not reflect the growth the team has shown through the opening month of the campaign. Sault opened the season with a narrow 15-12 road loss to the North Toronto Sentinels before dropping a competitive 14-3 contest to the Myers Riders. The Sabercats then faced two of the league’s strongest programs in the Cumberland Panthers and Kingston Grenadiers, falling 47-1 and 48-10 respectively.
Despite the challenging start, head coach Cody Wheten remains encouraged by what he has seen from his group.
“Playing good teams while showing we can run with them,” said Wheten when asked about positives from the opening four weeks. “Obviously the outcome doesn’t show it for some of the games, but our first two losses were a clear sign to our coaching staff, players, and the league that although we are a smaller team, we can compete at this level.”
Wheten believes the difficult early schedule will benefit the team moving forward.
“The first four games, and upcoming games, were a great test for us against good teams filled with athletes that are going to the next level. We need to take those lessons learned and build on our confidence throughout the rest of the season. We have a lot of great athletes who are supportive of one another regardless of a win or loss.”
Preparing for Cornwall has been a major focus this week, with the coaching staff emphasizing discipline and execution.
“We’re preparing for big athletes up front, a mobile quarterback, and athletes on the perimeter,” explained Wheten. “We need to play sound football all around, have a great game plan going in, and play complementary football in all three phases of the game. We need the confidence to do our job and make a play when it presents itself, not force it.”
One of the biggest challenges for any young team is maintaining confidence during difficult stretches, but Wheten says his players have handled adversity well.
“I think our team is mature in their mindset, but we are young across the board,” he said. “As coaches, we’re responsible for showcasing positive plays to build confidence and focus on a next-play mentality. We don’t need to dwell on the past or things we can’t control. We can only affect what is in front of us right now.”
When it comes to securing that elusive first win of the season, Wheten believes the formula is simple.
“Effort,” he emphasized. “Effort is something we always preach because it’s a large part of a successful play, drive, and game. If we give 100 percent effort and do our own job to a high level, we can string together great drives, stop offenses, and score or create turnovers.”
The Sabercats’ head coach also pointed to special teams as a potential difference-maker on Saturday.
“Special teams is nearly 70 percent effort and 30 percent technique, and we have had moments of great success against very good special teams units throughout the season. We need to impact the game in this facet and find opportunities to shift the balance of the game in our favour.”
Saturday’s matchup presents an opportunity for the Sabercats to turn encouraging signs into tangible results. With a home crowd behind them and lessons learned from a demanding opening schedule, Sault Ste. Marie will be looking to put together its most complete performance of the season against a Cornwall team eager to move above the .500 mark.
Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Superior Heights Field and live on Saultsports TV.
