In a thrilling, high-scoring clash between the top two teams in the Ontario Summer Football League U18 ‘AA’ division, the Sudbury Spartans completed a dramatic comeback to defeat the Sault Sabercats 45–37 on Saturday, July 5th at Superior Heights in Sault Ste. Marie. The game marked the final regular season home appearance for the first-place Sabercats, who entered the contest unbeaten on their own turf.
The Sabercats came out firing early in the opening quarter. Quarterback Matti Tucker opened the scoring with an eight-yard scramble into the endzone at 10:47, with AJ Coccimiglio adding the extra point for a 7–0 lead. Moments later, Payton Melchiorre dashed ten yards for another Sault touchdown, and Coccimiglio’s second convert extended the lead to 14–0. The Sabercats continued their momentum with a 38-yard field goal from Coccimiglio to cap the quarter up 17–0.
Just as the first quarter expired, the Spartans got on the board when McMaster University commit Quin Mazzuchin hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Steven Sola. Braden Beggs converted to cut the lead to 17–7.
The second quarter saw both offenses continue to shine. Ethan Carchidi muscled his way in for a one-yard major to make it 24–7 for the Sabercats, only for Sudbury’s Evan Doyle to answer with a 15-yard touchdown run. A 28-yard field goal from Beggs brought Sudbury within striking distance at 24–17.
With just over a minute left in the half, the Sabercats extended their lead again when Nathan Guizzetti punched in a two-yard touchdown, making it 31–17. However, Sudbury responded quickly once again — Sola hit Beggs with a seven-yard touchdown strike to bring the Spartans within one possession. A rouge by Beggs just after the midway point of the third brought the score to 31–25.
The lead would change hands several times in the second half as the game evolved into a shootout. Sola’s eight-yard rushing touchdown gave Sudbury their first lead at 32–31. Guizzetti answered for the Sabercats with his second major of the day, putting the hosts ahead 38–32. But the Spartans were not finished. At 1:09 of the third, Sola connected once more with Mazzuchin for a 37-yard touchdown pass, and less than a minute later, he broke through the Sault defense for a 35-yard rushing touchdown with just 21.1 seconds left in the third quarter to complete the comeback.
Neither team would score in the fourth, as Sudbury held on for a 45–37 victory — a win that secures home-field advantage for the Spartans in the upcoming OSFL U18 ‘AA’ playoffs.
The Sabercats, who finish the regular season on the road, now await the final standings and playoff bracket to learn their opponent for the quarter-finals scheduled for Saturday, July 12th.
