Stevenson: Greyhounds Focused on Setting the Tone and Staying Disciplined on the Road to Start November

The third-place Soo U18 Greyhounds (6-1-1-1) will hit the road for a three-game weekend from Friday, October 31st to Sunday, November 2nd, with stops in New Liskeard and Kapuskasing. The Greyhounds open their trip Friday night against the fifth-place New Liskeard Cubs (6-5) before heading north to face the eighth-place Kapuskasing Flyers (2-6-1-2) for back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday. With points on the line against two divisional opponents, the Soo will look to continue their strong early-season play and close out the first weekend of November on a high note.

Entering the weekend, the Greyhounds sit with 13 points, having scored 64 goals while allowing just 22 — one of the best defensive records in the league. The Soo’s special teams have been dominant, operating at a 46.3 percent powerplay and an 88.2 percent penalty kill. The Cubs come into the series with 12 points, 38 goals for, and 33 against, while holding a 10.0 percent powerplay and an impressive 90.9 percent penalty kill. Meanwhile, the Flyers will meet the Hounds with five points, 27 goals for, and 59 against, along with the fewest penalty minutes in the GNU18HL at 120. With all three teams eager to climb the standings, the Greyhounds’ offensive depth and disciplined play could be the difference-maker on the road.

Coach Jeremy Stevenson emphasized the importance of setting the tone as the Soo U18 Greyhounds prepare for their long road swing north this weekend. “It’s very important to set the tone for this weekend, but more importantly, we need to set the tone for ourselves in how we play,” said Stevenson. The Greyhounds have built their reputation on hard work, structure, and discipline — key traits that the coaching staff expects to see continue on the road.

“This weekend is about us,” added Stevenson. “Play between the whistles and worry about what you can control.” He stressed the importance of sticking to the team’s systems and maintaining focus for a full 60 minutes each night. Stevenson noted that when the Greyhounds play to their strengths and stay disciplined within their style of play, success follows naturally. As the team hits the road, the message is clear — stay composed, stay united, and trust the process.

“Our team has bonded quickly this year. The players enjoy these trips together. Our leadership group is a big part of our success this year and I expect all the players to contribute in a leadership role. Everyone works together and that’s how we become successful. I think our goalies will be focused all game. Keep their heads into the game no matter how many shots. Our special teams have to be quick puck movement and attack. Playing aggressive will benefit us on PK and PP, added Stevenson.
