The Sault College Cougars opened their 2026 Ontario Football Conference (OFC) season in impressive fashion Saturday, battling back from a second-half deficit to defeat the Hamilton Hurricanes 40-22 at Nelson Stadium in Burlington.
Sault College wasted little time finding the scoreboard. Veteran Windsor, Ontario running back Sam Mustaspha broke loose for a spectacular 105-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter, giving the Cougars an early 7-0 advantage after second-year kicker Nik Vecchio converted the extra point.
The Cougars extended their lead in the second quarter when Barrie, Ontario’s Rylan Varcoe found the end zone for his first touchdown in a Sault College jersey. Vecchio added the conversion to put the Cougars ahead 14-0.
Hamilton answered back as Milti Muraca broke through the Cougar defensive line and scored the Hurricanes’ first major of the afternoon. Austin Wojciechowski added the conversion to cut the Sault College lead to 14-7.
The Hurricanes continued to build momentum before halftime when their quarterback connected with Wes Wiens on a 32-yard touchdown pass into the Cougars’ end zone. Wojciechowski’s extra point tied the game at 14-14.
With the clock winding down to halftime, Vecchio came through for Sault College, splitting the uprights on a 32-yard field goal as time expired. The Cougars headed into the locker room with a 17-14 lead.
Hamilton came out of the break looking to regain control, and Muraca scored his second touchdown of the game early in the third quarter. Following another Wojciechowski conversion, the Hurricanes moved in front 22-17.
The Cougars responded immediately.
Montreal, Quebec’s Jayden Ralph scored his first touchdown in a Sault College uniform, putting the Cougars back in front 24-22 after Vecchio’s successful conversion.
Sault College then took control of the contest in the fourth quarter.
Mustaspha opened the scoring in the final frame with his second major of the afternoon, breaking away for a 47-yard touchdown run. Vecchio once again converted, pushing the Cougar advantage to 31-22.
Vecchio then added two more points on a safety to increase the Sault College lead to 33-22.
Mustaspha capped off a tremendous individual performance with another touchdown run, this time from 15 yards out. Vecchio’s extra point completed the scoring and secured a convincing 40-22 victory for the Cougars.
Mustaspha finished the afternoon as a major factor in the Cougar attack, finding the end zone four times while helping Sault College overcome Hamilton’s second-half push. Vecchio was also instrumental throughout the afternoon, contributing multiple converts, a 32-yard field goal and a safety.
The victory gives Sault College a perfect 1-0 start to the 2026 OFC season and provides the Cougars with plenty of momentum heading into their home opener.
Cougars Return Home
Sault College will now return to Sault Ste. Marie to prepare for their next matchup at Superior Heights Field, where they are scheduled to host the Quinte Riptides in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
The Riptides enter the matchup looking to bounce back after suffering a 22-3 home-field loss to the visiting London Beefeaters.
After opening the season with an exciting road victory, the Cougars will look to carry that momentum onto their home field as they continue their 2026 OFC campaign.
