At the Rankin Arena on Monday, January 12th, the first-place Superior Heights Steelhawks (5–1) continued their strong season with a decisive victory over the third-place CASS Huskies (1–2) in Sault Ste. Marie High School Girl’s Hockey League action.
Superior Heights opened the scoring midway through the first period. At 12:13, Fiona Prophet put the Steelhawks on the board with her fifth goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Ava Mount and Alana Johnstone. Just under two minutes later, Grace Curran doubled the lead at 10:27, netting her eighth of the season with assists from Zara Zavoral and Prophet, giving the Steelhawks a 2–0 advantage after one.
The Huskies showed resilience early in the second period, as Dani Stewart cut the deficit to one at 9:42 with her fourth goal of the season on an unassisted effort. Superior Heights responded quickly and decisively. On the power play at 5:33, Curran scored her second of the game and ninth of the season, assisted by Zavoral and Lucy Curran. Just 22 seconds later, Ava Mount made it 4–1 with her seventh of the season, finishing a setup from Lucy Curran and Kyle Hemsworth. The Steelhawks capped off the period at 3:29 when Maelle Brown scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Grace Curran and Lillian Rumiel, sending Superior Heights into the final intermission with a commanding 5–1 lead.
In the third period, the Steelhawks continued to apply pressure. Mount added her second goal of the game and eighth of the season at 8:47, assisted by Katie Hindermeier, extending the lead to 6–1. The Huskies found a late response at 6:33, as Kendall Kleist scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Charlotte Nicholson, rounding out the scoring at 6–2.
Between the pipes, Kaydence Wardell earned the win for the Steelhawks with a steady performance, while Claire Henshell handled goaltending duties for the Huskies.
