Steelhawks Pull Away After Tight First to Top Wolverines in Matinee Clash

At the Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, January 13th, the Superior Heights Steelhawks and White Pines Wolverines met in an early afternoon matinee as part of Sault Ste. Marie High School Hockey League action. The game marked the fourth meeting between the two high school hockey programs this season, after the Steelhawks earned a 3–1 victory over the Wolverines on December 15th at the John Rhodes Centre.

The Wolverines struck first in the opening period, silencing the crowd midway through the frame. At 12:14, Owen Sanderson continued his strong season, burying his 12th goal of the year off a setup from Chase Socchia to give White Pines a 1–0 lead. The Steelhawks responded quickly and dramatically, finding the equalizer with just seven seconds remaining in the period. Ryan Oliver finished a late rush to tie the game 1–1, with assists going to Ayden Hamilton and Rylan Hudson, swinging momentum back to Superior Heights heading into the intermission.

The second period proved to be the turning point, as the Steelhawks took control of the game with a flurry of goals. At 10:41, Chase Cerasuolo capitalized on a powerplay opportunity, scoring unassisted to give Superior Heights its first lead of the afternoon. Just over three minutes later, Curtis Johnson extended the advantage to 3–1, converting a feed from Mathieu Tremblay.

Superior Heights continued to apply pressure, and it paid off again at 3:04 when William Zuke made it 4–1, finishing a play set up by Alex Hoffe and Johnson. The Steelhawks capped off the dominant period late, as Ty Cond netted his 12th goal of the season at 1:16, with Carter Neabel picking up the assist, sending Superior Heights into the third period with a commanding 5–1 lead.

In the final frame, the Steelhawks stayed disciplined and closed out the contest. At 13:24, Mathieu Tremblay added the finishing touch, scoring his first goal of the season with helpers from Alex Hoffe and Rylan Hudson to round out the scoring.

Peter Gartshore was solid between the pipes for Superior Heights, backstopping the Steelhawks to the win, while Ben Potter handled goaltending duties for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines will look to bounce back on January 16th when they face the Korah Colts at the John Rhodes Centre, with puck drop scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Steelhawks return to action on January 22nd, taking on the St. Mary’s Knights in a 3:30 p.m. start, also at the John Rhodes Centre.
