After opening their inaugural season in the Ontario Power 5 Football League, the Sault Steelers are coming off a (22-8) win over the Sudbury Spartans in Sudbury on June 8th, the Steelers hit the road for the second straight week to meet the Tri City Outlaws in Guelph, Ontario on Saturday, June 15th.
With only 22 players on the road trip to Guelph, the Steelers dropped their second game of the season with a 21 – 9 loss to the Outlaws with Michael Reid scoring a Sault touchdown on a punt return with Brady Smith adding two points with a safety to bring the Steelers record to 1 – 1 on the season.
Steeler Jonathan Bujold told Saultsports that “We put ourselves in a rough position, travelling with just 22 players dressing. A handful of those 22 had limited game experience at this level. A lot of key players going both ways and really having to empty the tank. It’s frustrating to be in that situation but at the end of the day the schedule was set at the very last minute due to circumstances beyond our control. Shift work guys getting two days off in a row at the last minute became a real challenge. Hats off to TCO as well though, we didn’t back down and they came out as a different team than we say on film from week one.”
“Alot of veteran star players were able to play this week for them and it showed. We’ll go back to the drawing board on some stuff. They definitely showed us a few spots where we need to adjust, but having a full roster at home next week versus Sarnia will certainly help us play a more complete game,” added Bujold.
The Steelers are back in action when they host the Sarnia Imperials in Sault Ste Marie at Rocky DiPietro Field with a 7:00 p.m kickoff.
