On Saturday, October 18th and Sunday, October 19th, the Soo U18AA Greyhounds made the trip to Marinette, Wisconsin for a three-game weekend series against the Badger City Badgers. The series provided a strong test for the Greyhounds, who showed steady improvement each game and capped off the weekend with a hard-earned victory in the finale.
The opening game saw the Badgers strike early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Julia Purintin and Lauren Ruis. The Hounds responded in the second period when Harlee Cote found the back of the net off a setup from Myla Meakin, narrowing the gap to one. Despite the push, the Badgers added a third goal late in the third to seal a 3-1 win.
Player of the Game honours went to Alexe Villebrun, while goaltender Pippa Holmes turned aside 16 of 19 shots faced in a solid effort.
In Saturday’s rematch in game two, the Hounds once again battled hard but fell by the same 3-1 score. Badger City opened the scoring in the first and added another in the second before Soo forward Ashlyn Kobzick answered with an unassisted goal to get the Hounds on the board. The Badgers added an empty-netter late to secure the win.
Kobzick earned Player of the Game for her performance, while Britton Notte was strong between the pipes, stopping 18 of 21 shots.
Game three was a Sunday’s final matchup saw the Soo’s determination pay off. After trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, the Badgers extended their lead to 2-0 early in the frame. Refusing to quit, the Hounds stormed back with three unanswered goals. Harlee Cote sparked the comeback with an unassisted goal before Riley Reed tied the game off a setup from Alexe Villebrun. Cote then netted her second of the game at 1:43, assisted by Ashlyn Kobzick, to secure a thrilling 3-2 win for the Greyhounds.
Britton Notte was stellar in goal, making 17 saves on 19 shots and earning Player of the Game honours for her strong performance.
The Soo U18AA Greyhounds wrapped up the Wisconsin series with a 1-2 record, showcasing resilience, growing chemistry, and the ability to battle through adversity.
Next up, the Greyhounds will travel to Detroit, Michigan from Friday, October 24th to Sunday, October 26th to compete in the 2025 USA Canada Cup.
