On Saturday, May 14th in Alpena, Michigan, the Soo Black Sox U18 opened their 2022 baseball season against the Alpena Varsity Wildcats.
The Black Sox fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 12-0 loss to Alpena Varsity Wildcats on Saturday. Alpena scored on a home run by Matt Thompson and a triple by Jake Zann in the first inning.
The U18 Sox struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Alpena, giving up 12 runs.
The Wildcats opened up scoring in the first inning, when Thompson homered on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.
A single by Ty Beaupre in the first inning was a positive for Black Sox 18U.
Logan Momrick pitched Alpena to victory. The hurler allowed two hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out six and walking zero. Brady Kollen threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Connor Bruzas took the loss for the Black Sox. The pitcher allowed six hits and eight runs over three innings, striking out one.
Nolan Toni, Wesley Pomeroy, and Beaupre each collected one hit to lead the U18 Sox.
Zann went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Alpena Varsity Wildcats in hits. Alpena was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Alex Cadarette made the most plays with six.
Black Sox 18U watched game two slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 19-0 loss to Alpena Varsity Wildcats in the second of a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m Saturday afternoon in game two of the day. The Wildcats scored on a single by Marc Kirchner and a single by Brady Niedzwiecki in the first inning.
The Black Sox struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Alpena Varsity Wildcats, giving up 19 runs.
Alpena opened up scoring in the first inning. Alpena Varsity Team scored two runs when Kirchner singled.
One bright spot for Black Sox was a single by Keyton Mousseau in the second inning.
Travis Weide led the Alpena to victory on the pitcher’s mound. The ace went two innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out four and walking zero. Kirchner and Matt Thompson entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Nolan Toni took the loss for the U18 Sox. Toni allowed nine hits and 11 runs over two innings, striking out one.
Alpena launched two home runs on the day. Logan Momrick had a four bagger in the third inning. Jake Zann went deep in the second inning.
Mousseau led Black Sox with one hit in two at bats.
The Alpena Varsity Wildcats saw the ball well today, racking up 17 hits in the game. Kirchner, Landen Spomer, Thompson, Brady Kollen, Zann, and Niedzwiecki each collected multiple hits for Alpena Varsity Team. The Wildcats didn’t commit a single error in the field. Niedzwiecki had eight chances in the field, the most on the team.
The U18 Black Sox next opponents will be the U15 Black Sox in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario on May 19th and 26th at 6:00 p.m at I.D.A Park.
