Coming off a win and loss at home in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario on Wednesday, August 9th at IDA Park over the visiting Northern Michigan Patriots of Petoskey, Michigan, the Soo 18U Black Sox returned to action when they headed south of the border for a Sunday, August 13th doubleheader against the Northern Michigan Patriots in Petoskey, Michigan.
In game one of the Sunday doubleheader, the Soo Black Sox 18U were triumphant over Northern Michigan Patriots 8-3.
Soo Black Sox 18U got on the board in the top of the first inning after Carmine Perna doubled, Carter Young singled, and Cole Masse was struck by a pitch, each scoring one run.
Gavin Lamming earned the win for Soo Black Sox 18U. The starting pitcher surrendered zero hits and one run over three innings, striking out two and walking three. Simrale took the loss for Northern Michigan Patriots. They went five and one-third innings, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits, striking out three and walking one. Masse and Connor Bruzas each appeared in relief for Soo Black Sox 18U.
Soo Black Sox 18U tallied 13 hits in the game. Perna led Soo Black Sox 18U with three hits in four at bats. Masse, Lamming, Young, and Keyton Mousseau each collected multiple hits for Soo Black Sox 18U.
Schroder went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Northern Michigan Patriots in hits.
In game two of the doubleheader in Petoskey, Michigan, Soo Black Sox 18U won big over Northern Michigan Patriots 11-5.
A single by Matthew Forsey on a full count put Soo Black Sox 18U on the board in the top of the second.
Northern Michigan Patriots captured the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second after Hansrl hit a sacrifice fly, and Northern Michigan Patriots scored on a wild pitch, each scoring one run.
Northern Michigan Patriots committed an error, which helped Soo Black Sox 18U tie the game at two in the top of the third.
Northern Michigan Patriots took the lead, 5-2, in the bottom of the fourth thanks to singles by Hansrl, and Galer.
Soo Black Sox 18U tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a fielder’s choice by Kolton Tremblay, a ground out by Carmine Perna, and a walk by Forsey.
Soo Black Sox 18U jumped into the lead in the top of the sixth when Tremblay doubled, scoring one run, a passed ball scored one run, and Carter Young singled, scoring two runs.
Nolan Toni earned the win for Soo Black Sox 18U. The starting pitcher allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Jankorski took the loss for Northern Michigan Patriots. The reliever went one and one-third innings, giving up two runs (zero earned) on two hits, striking out one and walking none. Hansrl started on the bump for Northern Michigan Patriots. The starting pitcher allowed eight hits and seven runs (three earned) over five and one-third innings, striking out five and walking four. Tremblay threw two innings of scoreless ball for Soo Black Sox 18U in relief. The reliever surrendered one hit, striking out one and walking one.
Soo Black Sox 18U tallied 12 hits in the game. Michael Starzomski, Tremblay, and Ty Beaupre each collected two hits for Soo Black Sox 18U. Tremblay went 2-for-5 at the plate as the center fielder led the team with two runs batted in.
Hansrl and Gudakunst were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Northern Michigan Patriots while hitting back-to-back. Hansrl led Northern Michigan Patriots with two runs batted in. The pitcher went 2-for-2 on the day.
The Soo 18U Black Sox will now prepare for the 2023 ‘A’ 18U OBA Provincial Championships that will be held in Stratford, Ontario over the Friday, August 18th to Sunday, August 20th weekend.
