Name: Payton Melchiorre
Position: Running Back
High School: Korah (Grade 12)
Number of seasons with Sabercats: 4 seasons

Why is summer football so important to you?
Summer football is so important to me because it allows for me to develop my game. As well as being able to showcase my skills to a larger audience across the province.

What are you most looking forward to playing this season for the Sabercats?
I’d see myself in a similar role to the high school season. Being able to be the feature back while also having the opportunity to return kicks and long snap.

What are your personal and team-oriented goals for the upcoming 2026 OSFL season?
The biggest goal is always winning, after all that’s what matters most. The personal stuff just becomes a product of it.

For anyone that is not familiar with your play style, how would you describe yourself as a player?
Very quick and elusive runner with high receiving upside. Very tough play style, very durable.

Who is your biggest football role model? Could be a coach, teammate?
My biggest role model has to go to my dad. Learning from someone with that level of experience as well as someone that supports me as much as he does. It’s no question my dad.

How do you stay motivated and focused during a game or practice?
The thought of playing at the next level is always a constant motivator. Every rep has to be intentional or you’re just wasting your time. I always go back to thinking that there’s nothing more expensive than a missed opportunity.

What do you think makes a great leader on the football field?
I think experience plays a big role, after being a seasoned captain for many years you start to find out what works and what doesn’t. Coaching has also helped quite a bit, at Korah were mentored on how to be leaders and it’s shaped me into the captain I am today.

What is your greatest accomplishment as a football player?
Winning is the best thing in sports. So I’d without a doubt have to say being an OFSSA champion takes the cake. All the personal stuff like the All-Ontario’s, MVP’s, and OPOY’s come second fiddle to something like that.

What makes you the best candidate for this position that the coaches have asked you to play?
I think the film speaks for itself, that along with other accolades. I’ve been around this great coaching staff for a while now and they know what I’m capable of.

What do you think is the most important aspect of being a member of a team?
I think the ability to work with others is paramount. Football teams function as a unit. If one man out of the twelve that are on the field mess up their assignment, the whole play is botched. That’s how key it is.

Finally, what do you think is the most important quality for a football player to possess compared to other sports?
I think that goes to resiliency. The game of football changes so fast. You can’t let one play or one drive mess you up for the rest of the game or else you’re useless. I always come back to saying “so what next play” no matter what happens.
