The Sault Sabercats are still searching for their first victory of the 2026 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) AAA season after suffering a 47-1 loss to the Cumberland Panthers on Saturday, May 30th at Superior Heights Field in Sault Ste. Marie.
Entering the contest with an 0-2 record, the Sabercats were looking to get back on track against a Cumberland squad that arrived with a 1-1 mark. Instead, the Panthers controlled the game from start to finish, using a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive play to improve to 2-1 on the season.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Cumberland broke through at the 10:13 mark of the second quarter when quarterback Ricky Milito connected with Ousmane Camara on a four-yard touchdown pass. Travis Uren added the convert to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers extended their advantage just under two minutes later when the Sabercats conceded a safety, making it 9-0. Cumberland continued to build momentum at 4:36 of the quarter as Tanner Hudson-Ward hauled in a 20-yard pass from Milito before breaking four tackle attempts and racing 55 yards to the end zone. The missed convert left the score at 15-0.
The Panthers struck again with 2:25 remaining in the half when Elvis Ramde made one of the game’s most impressive plays, ripping the ball away from a Sabercat player and returning it 55 yards for a touchdown. Uren’s successful convert pushed the lead to 22-0.
The Sabercats got on the board late in the half when Cumberland conceded a rouge with just 7.9 seconds remaining, making it 22-1. However, the Panthers responded immediately as the Sault conceded a rouge on the final play of the half, sending Cumberland into the break with a commanding 23-1 lead.
The visitors continued to pile on points in the second half. Uren opened the third quarter by kicking a rouge to make it 24-1. At the 5:38 mark, Gabriel Canonico powered through the Sabercat defensive front for a three-yard touchdown run, and the convert increased the lead to 31-1.
Just seconds later, the Sabercats conceded another rouge, and Cumberland added to its total at 2:08 of the third quarter when Noah Huibers scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown. Uren’s convert made it 40-1 heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers capped off the scoring with 10:27 remaining in the game as running back Sheick Camara burst through the Sabercat defense for Cumberland’s sixth touchdown of the afternoon. Uren added the convert to complete the 47-1 victory.
Sabercat coach Cody Wheten told Saultsports that we’re in a league of great teams and tougher competition, and winning is hard. If you look across the board, there are lots of good teams we play every week, and we need to be perfect to beat them. We’re mostly out-manned purely because of the market, but that doesn’t change our mentality. Our guys grind every day on and off the field to be better, then show up on gameday and put 100% of their energy and focus into the game. I’ve seen a lot of growth from this young group, and there is still a long way to go. Anyone on the outside will have a hard time understanding that these losses don’t show the true progression of the team, and that we are learning and growing every week.”
There are a lot, honestly. I couldn’t count the number of guys that gave relentless effort on every drive, every play, coming off the field best tired. That’s 100% effort. Our defense was in a battle with a good run team, and offense in a battle with a good defense. Our special teams played great and the effort was fantastic against a dangerous return team limiting their return yards to be negligible. None of our players batted an eye. “They stepped in, put their body on the line, and kept giving it their all. I’m proud of their grit, and willingness to never give up. Lots of other positives at an individual level, but we will showcase those in film. We have a tight knit group of guys that have won at the high school level, so they have that winning DNA. As we continue throughout the season, we’re going to get better at playing beside each other and it’s going to translate to more plays-made, but we have to keep grinding. Put our nose down and put one foot in front of the other, and continue to want to be better. The season is far from over and we need to keep trending up”, added Wheten.
Despite the difficult result, the Sabercats will have an opportunity to regroup next weekend when they travel to Kingston for a June 6 matchup against the Grenadiers. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Panthers will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Cornwall to face the Wildcats on June 6, with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m.
