The Sault Sabercats picked up their first victory of the 2026 Ontario Summer Football League season in dominant fashion on Saturday, May 30, defeating the Peterborough Wolverines 51-7 at Superior Heights Field.
Entering the contest, the Sabercats carried a 0-1 record after their season opener in Clarington on May 23 was halted due to inclement weather, resulting in a tie. Peterborough arrived in Sault Ste. Marie looking for their first win as well, carrying an 0-2 record into the matchup.
The Wolverines struck first when quarterback Michael Porter capped off a drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown. Porter added the convert to give Peterborough an early 7-0 advantage.
The Sabercats responded in the second quarter behind the arm of quarterback Reegan DeZordo. At the 9:25 mark, DeZordo connected with Vinn Volpe-Sagle on a short two-yard pass before the receiver turned it into a nine-yard gain to bring the Sabercats within a point. Adam Provenzano hauled in the two-point conversion to give the home side its first lead of the afternoon at 8-7.
Sault Ste. Marie continued to build momentum as Davian Clarke broke loose for a 17-yard touchdown run at 7:49 of the second quarter. Provenzano added another two-point conversion to extend the lead to 16-7.
Just under two minutes later, Provenzano found the end zone himself with a three-yard rushing major. He then added the two-point convert to push the Sabercats’ advantage to 24-7.
Clarke wasn’t finished. With just 76 seconds remaining in the first half, he raced 10 yards for his second touchdown of the game. Provenzano once again converted the two-point attempt, increasing the lead to 32-7.
Before halftime, DeZordo continued his impressive performance through the air, finding Zyler Dougherty in the end zone on a five-yard touchdown pass to send the Sabercats into the break with a commanding 38-7 lead.
The offensive attack remained relentless in the third quarter. DeZordo hooked up with Volpe-Sagle on a 13-yard completion that the receiver turned into a four-yard touchdown play. Mason Mazzuca converted the extra point to make it 45-7 at the 7:51 mark of the third quarter.
The Sabercats put the finishing touches on the victory in the fourth quarter when Robert Zagoric powered into the end zone at 3:35, securing the final major of the contest and a convincing 51-7 victory.
The win marks the Sabercats’ first of the season and showcased a balanced offensive attack led by DeZordo, Clarke, Provenzano, and Volpe-Sagle. Defensively, Sault shut down the Wolverines after allowing the game’s opening score, holding Peterborough off the scoreboard for the remainder of the afternoon.
Next up, the Wolverines will travel to Oshawa on June 6 for a noon kickoff against the Hawkeyes. The Sabercats will hit the road for the first time this season, travelling to North Bay to face the Bulldogs in a 4:00 p.m. start.
