Lake Superior Figure Skating Club (LSFSC) Novice figure skater, Yvonne Barnes represented Team Ontario at the 2023-2024 Skate Canada Pre-Novice/Novice Challenge figure skating competition in Oakville over the February 1-4 weekend.
The Team Ontario Women’s Novice group was comprised of the top 16 competitors in the province. Qualifying was rigorous, and skaters were required to meet the Skate Canada minimum technical score in addition to the ranking process to make the team.
The skaters competing at Challenge were ultimately vying for one of 18 spots at the Canadian National Novice Figure Skating Championships in Waterloo at the end of February. Barnes placed 35 th overall at Challenge. It was a tremendous experience competing against the top skaters from across country including Ontario, Alberta/Northwest Territories/Nunavut, British Columbia/Yukon, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
“Yvonne had a great experience competing against the top Novice Skaters from each Province. I couldn’t be more proud of her. Yvonne’s hard work and determination showed in each performance. After working with Yvonne for 12 years watching her compete at a National event is all a coach can ask for”, said LSFSC Head Coach and Director of Skating, Kerry Bain.
