Arnold Sinks Overtime Game Winner in Beavers Win Over Thunderbirds

With thirteen points separating the third place (27-13-2-1) Soo Thunderbirds and the second place (35-10) Blind River Beavers, the Thunderbirds hosted the Beavers on Friday, February 9th in a west division matchup at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie.

At 4:33 of the opening period, Andrey Manov rifles a slapshot from just inside the right blueline through traffic to be tipped by Clark Furman to find the back of Thunderbird netminder Kolton Bourret to give the Beavers a 1 – 0 lead. Benjamin Armatage drew the other helper on Furman’s 14th of the season. With an unassisted goal from the left boards just outside the faceoff circle, Jacob Smith fires a snapshot under Blind River goaltender Noah Tegelaar’s catcher at 7:19 of the second for his 20th of the season to even the game 1 – 1 for the Soo. At 9:06 of the second and Bourret sprawled across his crease, Evan Fraccario lifts the Beavers go-ahead shorthanded goal over the Thunderbird netminder’s catcher to give Blind River a 2 – 1 lead. Jakob Kovacs and Joseph Rotilio notched the contributors on Fraccaro’s 20th of the season.

With a scrum in front of the Beaver’s crease and the Soo on a powerplay, Daniel Beaupre picks up a rebound to lift the tying goal over Tegelaar’s blocker to pull the Thunderbirds tied 2 – 2 at 9:28 of the second. Quinn Myles added the lone helper on Beaupre’s 17th of the season. 28 seconds past the midway mark of the second, Thomas Degagne picks up a loose puck in scramble in front of the Beavers net to lift the Soo’s third over Tegelaar’s right shoulder to give the Thunderbirds a 3 – 2 lead. Jonathan Sonedecker had the assist on Degagne’s tenth of the season. 2:17 into the final period, Andrey Manov fires a shot along the ice from the right blueline to find the back of Bourret’s net to even the game 3 – 3 for the Beavers. Benjamin Armatage added the helper on Manov’s tenth of the season. Scoring his 13th of the season, Connor Stokes picks a Beaver turnover in the right faceoff circle to fire a pass to Callum McAuley in front of Blind River’s net to find back of the net for the Soo’s fourth of the contest at 4:38. Grayson Ebrahim registered the other contributor on McAuley’s goal.

At 7:11, Brendan Cooke picks up a rebound off if Bourret’s left pad to slide the tying goal into the back of the Soo’s net to tie the game 4 – 4. Wyatt Gibson and Cameron Menard had the assists on Cooke’s 11th of the season. In a three on three overtime, Owen Arnold skates coast to coast to sink his fourth of the season past Bourret to give the Beavers a 5 – 4 overtime win at 2:56. Fraccaro contributed on Arnold’s overtime game winner. Blind River goaltender Noah Tegelaar stopped 27 of 31 shots in the win while Thunderbird netminder Kolton Bourret turned away 25 of 30 shots in the loss.

Beaver coach Kyle Brick told Saultsports that “honestly I thought the soo carried the game for 40 minutes. We played 20 and were fortunate to get the two points! I thought our depth played a big factor in the third. A 20 year old made a big play at a big time, can’t wait for tomorrow night.”

The Beavers will now host the Thunderbirds in Blind River on Saturday, February 10th in a 7:00 p.m start.
