SUDBURY, ON – In a weekend defined by grit, heart, and pure theatrical drama, the Sault Ste. Marie U15 Dedicated Select Black Sox climbed to the mountaintop of Ontario baseball, capturing the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) Championship in spectacular fashion over the September 4th to 7th weekend.

Facing down elimination, time limits, and late-game deficits, the Black Sox weaponized a “team-first” culture to secure back-to-back, bottom-of-the-seventh walk-off victories against the tournament’s top seed.

With the victory, the Black Sox finish a historic run, boasting a staggering 12-2 record against Ontario’s elite dedicated select teams.

The championship journey kicked off Friday with a statement 10-4 victory over Newmarket. Ethan Pawalek set the tone on the mound as the starter, while Dean McCaig slammed the door shut in relief. The offence exploded early, powered by RBI doubles from McCaig, Carter Rome, Treyton Guzzo, and Patrick Cain. Pawalek drove in two runs, Myles Neison smashed an RBI single, and Greg Beckerson showcased his elite speed with two walks and two stolen bases to score twice.

Game 2 brought adversity. The Sox ran into a buzzsaw against the Barrie Baycats, falling 9-2. Despite Beckerson and Cain battling hard on the hill, and an early RBI single by Presley Rome to tie the game, a 9-run explosion by Barrie in the bottom of the third—compounded by a strict two-hour tournament time limit—halted a Sox comeback attempt.

Refusing to let the loss define them, the Sox roared back on Saturday morning with a flawless 10-0 mercy-rule blowout against Mississauga North. Treyton Guzzo was masterful, dealing a 5-inning complete-game shutout. McCaig and Carter Rome formed a lethal one-two punch at the top of the lineup, combining for five runs and four RBIs. Pawalek drove in two, while Maddox Guzzo chipped in an RBI single. The Sox completely terrorized the basepaths, racking up 10 stolen bases—including swipes from Beckerson, Graham Stewart, Cain, Maddox Guzzo, and Treyton Guzzo.

The offensive clinic continued Saturday evening with a 12-8 triumph over the Brampton Royals. McCaig started strong on the bump, striking out six, before Carter Rome and Colton Daynard provided crucial relief innings. Treyton Guzzo spearheaded a relentless hit parade with three hits and 3 RBIs, while Carter Rome added a double and single for another 3 RBIs. Beckerson and Cain drove in two apiece, Pawalek added one, and Myles Neison and Presley Rome each collected pairs of hits. Stewart crossed the plate twice, while Daynard epitomized the team’s gritty identity, willingly absorbing two hit-by-pitches to keep the line moving.

Crucially, the Sox defense began showcasing tournament-winning form during this match, executing shutdown defense by holding opposing runners exceptionally tight to the bags and throwing out three base-stealers to completely shut down Brampton’s run game.

Sunday morning set up a heavyweight clash against the undefeated London Scorpions. It became an instant classic.

Pawalek started on the bump, giving way to Beckerson, who delivered a legendary relief appearance—striking out 10 batters over 5.2 innings while allowing just a single run. Multi-hit games from Beckerson, McCaig, Cain, and Presley Rome kept the Sox alive, alongside a booming triple from Treyton Guzzo.

Down 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th, the magic began. Graham Stewart ignited the rally with a clutch base hit, followed by a sharp single from Beckerson to put the winning runs on base. Stepping up to the plate, Dean McCaig didn’t waste time—he crushed a first-pitch fastball deep to the fence in the gap, driving home both Stewart and Beckerson to trigger a wild walk-off celebration.

After winning a crucial coin flip for a bye straight to the final, the Black Sox waited for a Monday morning rematch against London, who witnessed their dynamic running game completely neutralized by the Sox’ airtight defensive containment.

The championship game was a true masterclass in defense and base runner management. Pawalek gave the Sox 3.1 strong innings, allowing just two runs, before Maddox Guzzo entered the game to throw 3.2 innings of flawless, shutout relief to keep the Scorpions at bay. By keeping the Scorpions pinned tightly to their bases all morning, the Sox defense prevented London from manufacturing additional runs.

Hits from Cain and Presley Rome, alongside heavily disciplined walks from McCaig, Beckerson, and Pawalek kept the pressure on. Myles Neison perfectly executed two textbook sacrifice bunts to move runners, but the Sox couldn’t find the breakthrough, entering the bottom of the 7th trailing 2-1.

Then, destiny repeated itself.

Graham Stewart drew a leadoff walk. Greg Beckerson followed with a walk of his own. Dean McCaig seamlessly advanced the runners to second and third on a razor-thin sacrifice play at first. Treyton Guzzo drew a walk to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice at home put two outs on the board, Ethan Pawalek showed ice-water veins, drawing a bases-loaded walk to tie the game 2-2.

That brought Colton Daynard to the dish. With the bases loaded and the championship on the line, Daynard locked in. On a 2-2 count, he smoked a line drive into right field, sending the bench into a frenzy as the winning run crossed the plate. Walk-off. Ball game. Champions.

While the team faced uphill battles earlier in the year during Rep tournaments, they completely dominated the Dedicated Select circuit, winning both tournaments they entered and going undefeated in their showcase.

More than the hardware, the coaching staff expressed immense pride in the team’s evolution. Overcoming mid-season slumps and injuries throughout the year—including the final weekend—the U15 Black Sox forged an unbreakable bond, defined by players picking each other up at every turn. From locking down the defense in all areas of the field to executing clutch hits, every single athlete adapted, sacrificed, and executed when their number was called—a true championship formula for a spectacular group of young men.
