In front of full house at Superior Heights field, the (0 – 1) Superior Heights Steelhawks took to the turf to face the (0 – 1) St Mary’s Knights in a Sault Ste Marie High School football senior clash.
At 4:48 of the opening quarter, Superior Heights quarterback ran the ball for a one yard touchdown carry after three straight one downs to give the Steelhawks a 6 – 0 lead. With 86 seconds left in the first, St Mary’s Daniel Bumbaco rushes for 54 yards after a one yard pass from Knight quarterback Matti Tucker to even the game 6 – 6. Bumbaco found the uprights for a convert to give the Knights a 7 – 6 lead. Bumbaco kicks a 15 yard field goal with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter to bring the Knights lead to 10 – 6. The Knights increased their lead to 12 – 6 with a two rouge with 0:00 left on the clock in the third. With his second attempt of a St Mary’s field goal, Bumbaco brings the Knights lead to 15 – 6 at 9:22 of the third with a 25 yard kick. At seven minutes even of the fourth, Tucker goes to the air over three Steelhawk defenders to find Bumbaco in the endzone with a 32 yard touchdown pass to give St Mary’s a 21 – 6 lead. With the convert, Bumbaco adds to the lead to bring the lead to 22 – 6. The Knights finish the game with a 23 – 6 win after scoring one more point at 4:21.
The Knights will now host the Huron Heights Warriors on October 1st while the Steelhawks take on the Korah Colts on Friday, September 1st in a 7:30 p.m kickoff.
