After earning a win over the Sarnia Sting on home ice on February 20th, the fourth-place Soo Greyhounds (34-16-1-5) returned to the GFL Memorial Gardens on Saturday, February 21st, where they hosted the sixth-place Guelph Storm (24-26-2-2) in Ontario Hockey League action. The Greyhounds had taken the previous meeting between the clubs, a 3–1 victory in Guelph back on January 16th, setting the stage for another tightly contested matchup.
The game unfolded as a goaltending duel through the opening two periods, with both netminders turning aside quality chances to keep the contest scoreless. The deadlock was finally broken midway through the third period when the Storm capitalized on a power-play opportunity. At 10:08, Tyler Hopkins scored the lone goal of the night, recording his 17th of the season to give Guelph a 1–0 lead. Wil McFadden and Leo Serlin picked up the assists on the decisive tally.
Despite a strong push from the Greyhounds in the final minutes, Storm goaltender Zach Jovanovski stood tall, stopping all 38 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season. At the other end of the ice, Soo netminder Carter George was solid as well, making 31 saves on 32 shots in the hard-luck loss.
With the setback, the Greyhounds will look to rebound quickly as they hit the road for their next contest. Soo returns to action on Wednesday, February 25th, when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Sudbury Wolves in a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
