Gridiron Glory: High School Football Kicks Off with Electrifying 2024 Opening Day

On Saturday, September 7th at Superior Heights Field, the White Pines Wolverines took to the turf to open up the 2024 Sault Ste Marie High School Senior Football season to face the Superior Heights Steelhawks.At 7:21 of the third quarter, the Wolverines conceded one point with a rouge in their endzone to give the Steelhawks a 1 – 0 lead. With 1:46 remaining in the opening game of the third quarter White Pines tied the game 1 – 1 with a Superior Heights rouge. At 5:03 of the fourth quarter, Superior Heights quarterback Daikaden Gauthier barreled through the Wolverines defensive line with a four yard rush to give the Steelhawks a 8 – 1 after Daxyn Pringle found the uprights for the extra point.

Next up for the Steelhawks will be on Friday, September 13th when they meet the St Mary’s Knights in a 7:30 p.m contest while the Wolverines meet the Korah Colts on Thursday, September 12th in a 7:30 p.m matchup.

Game two of the day in high school action the Steelhawks took to the field to face the Wolverines in junior action in a 1:00 p.m start.

Steelhawk Ben George opened the scoring at 9:04 of the first quarter with a seven yard yard, Gabe Beaton added the extra point to give Superior Heights a 7 – 0 lead. Three seconds later, Beaton booted a rouge to add to the lead to bring the score to 8 – 0. Steelhawk Evan Missere catches an eight yard pass from Superior Heights quarterback Nik Joseph to give the Steelhawks a 15 – 0 lead and a Beaton extra point at 10:26 of the second quarter. William Gould catches a Wolverine Shamus Cochrane interception to carry the ball for a 28 yard touchdown run at 8:20 of the second. Beaton added the single point to increase the lead to 22 – 0. At 6:03, Cypress Devries takes a knee in the Wolverines endzone to concede a safety to bring the Steelhawks lead to 24 – 0. Grade 10 Dede Alabi rushes the ball for a one yard carry to score the Wolverines first points of the 2024 season at 2:20 of the second quarter to bring the score to 24 – 6. With 81 seconds remaining in the half, Ben George evades a White Pines tackle on the 29 yard line to carry the ball into the Wolverines endzone to send Superior Heights up 31 – 6 after Beaton kicks the extra point. Steelhawk Eli Clowater added to the Superior Heights with only 24.4 seconds left in the half with a 17 yard run, Beaton added the extra point to send the Steelhawks into half with a 37 – 9 lead. Gabe Beaton found the uprights for the Steelhawks first field goal of the season from the 33 yard line to give Superior Heights a 41 – 6 lead at 5:20 of the third quarter. At 9:52 of the four quarter, Beaton was back at it again with his second field goal of the contest with a 28 yard kick through the Wolverine uprights to increase the lead to 44 – 6. Scoring his second major of the game, Wolverine Dede Alabi runs for a White Pines 88 yard touchdown at 6:07 of the fourth to finish the game with the Steelhawks earning their first win of the season 44 – 6 over the Wolverines.

Week two junior matchups for the Wolverines and Steelhawks will be Superior Heights taking on the Knights in a 4:45 p.m start on September 13th along with White Pines facing the Colts in a 4:45 p.m kickoff on September 12th.

At Superior Heights for the third game of opening day, the 2023 City champions, the St Mary’s Knights hit the turf to face the Korah Colts.

Nathan Guizzietti opened the scoring for the Colts with a 53 yard rushing touchdown at 6:21 of the first quarter, Ty Koski added the extra point to give Korah a 7 – 0 lead. St Mary’s conceded two points at 11:38 of the second to bring Korah’s lead to 9 – 0. At 1:43 of the second Kaylob Thibodeau breaks through the Knights defensive line for a three yard carry to bring the Colts lead to 16 – 0 after a Koski extra point. Ty Koski booted a 22 yard field goal for the Colts with 20.1 remaining in the half to send Korah into halftime up 19 – 0 over the Knights. Korah conceded two points at 7:36 of the third quarter for the Knights. With Nate Carter in Korah’s endzone with double coverage, the Knights’ student athlete sprung into the air to catch a Matti Tucker 30 yard pass to give St Mary’s their first major of the 2024 season, Carter added the extra point to close the gap to ten for the Knights. With only 2.4 seconds left in the game, Guizzietti gives the Colts a 25 – 9 lead after rushing for a 18 yard carry, Koski added the extra point to give Korah their first senior win of the season with a final score of 26 – 9.

The Colts will now face Wolverines in senior action at 7:30 p.m on Friday, September 13th while the Knights take their 0 – 1 record into Thursday, September 12th to face the Korah Colts in a 7:30 p.m kickoff.

Wrapping up opening day of the 2024 Sault Ste Marie high school football season, Korah’s Ryder Strachan catches a Knights interception to rush 23 yards for the Colts first major of the season at 6:27 of the first quarter. Strachan added the extra point to give Korah a 7 – 0 lead. With 1:46 remaining in the first half, St Mary’s Grayson Giordano kicked an 18 yard field goal to close the gap to only four heading into halftime.
Brett Koski fired a wobbling eleven yard pass to Marciano Cranston in the Knights endzone for the final touchdown of the game, Strachan kicked the extra point to give the Colts a 14 – 3 win over the Knights.

The Knights will now take on the Steelhawks on September 12th in a 4:45 p.m matchup while the Colts meet the Wolverines on September 13th in a 4:45 p.m contest.
