The Soo Greyhounds saw their 2026 season come to a dramatic and emotional end on Sunday morning, falling 5–4 in double overtime to the Greater Toronto Capitals in the semifinal of the OHF U15AA Championships in Vaughan.
In a rematch of a tightly contested round-robin game that saw the Capitals edge the Greyhounds 4–3, the semifinal delivered even more intensity, with Soo battling back from an early deficit to force overtime.
The Capitals came out strong in the opening period, taking a 1–0 lead at 12:55 as Orlando Lisena scored his first of the championships, assisted by Gabriel Logullo and Gerry Lisena. They extended their lead at 6:11 when Marco Fiorino found the back of the net, with Thomas Harrison picking up the assist.
Greater Toronto made it 3–0 at 4:09, as Tyler Bautista scored his first of the tournament, assisted by Gerry Lisena. The Greyhounds responded late in the period, cutting into the deficit at 1:35 when Luke Thorburn scored his first of the championships, with Owen Webb and Jackson Marchand earning assists, making it 3–1 after one.
In the second period, the Capitals restored their three-goal cushion at 14:02. Gabriel Logullo scored his first of the championships, assisted by Orlando Lisena, to make it 4–1. However, the Greyhounds continued to push back. On the power play at 2:39, Jackson Marchand scored his first of the tournament, with assists from Luke Thorburn and Jakob Mullin, cutting the lead to 4–2 heading into the third.
The Greyhounds mounted an impressive comeback early in the final frame. At 1:04, Carson Mick scored his first of the championships, assisted by Marchand, bringing Soo within one. Just 20 seconds later at 0:44, Mick struck again for his second of the game and tournament, once again set up by Marchand, tying the game 4–4 and sending it to overtime.
Both teams battled through a scoreless first overtime period, trading chances and relying on strong goaltending to keep the game alive. The Greyhounds received shared efforts in net from Teri Mayer and Lucas Martin, while Griffin Williams stood tall for the Capitals.
The game was finally decided in the second overtime at 11:13, when Orlando Lisena scored his second goal of the game unassisted, giving the Capitals a 5–4 victory and ending the Greyhounds’ championship hopes.
Despite the heartbreaking finish, the Greyhounds showed tremendous resilience, battling back from a three-goal deficit and pushing the game deep into overtime. The loss marks the end of their run at the 2026 OHF U15AA Championships and brings their season to a close following a hard-fought semifinal performance.
