Powered by a four-point night from Marco Mignosa, the Soo Greyhounds delivered a strong performance on home ice, defeating the Sudbury Wolves on Wednesday, January 7th at the Memorial Gardens in a midweek Ontario Hockey League clash. The win saw the third-place West Division Greyhounds improve on their position as they entered the night with 44 points, while the Central Division’s third-place Wolves, who arrived in Sault Ste. Marie with 31 points, were unable to slow the Soo attack.
The Greyhounds wasted little time setting the pace in the opening period. At 4:41, Quinn McKenzie opened the scoring with his 15th goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Mignosa and Callum Croskery. Just under three minutes later, Chase Reid made an immediate impact in his return to the Soo lineup after rejoining the club from Team USA at the 2026 World Juniors, scoring his 15th of the season at 7:33 with Christopher Brown earning the lone assist.
Soo continued to press, and at 9:32 Lukas Fischer found the back of the net for his first goal in a Greyhound jersey and fourth of the season, with assists credited to Mignosa and Reid. The early offensive surge prompted a goaltending change for Sudbury, as Karesen Chartier replaced Bjorn Bronas after the Wolves allowed three goals on five shots. The Greyhounds capped off a dominant first period at 14:34 when Brown scored his 14th of the season, once again with Mignosa in on the play, along with Travis Hayes, giving Soo a commanding 4–0 lead.
Sudbury responded early in the second period, with Jean-Christoph Lemieux cutting the deficit to 4–1 just 42 seconds in, assisted by Gavin Ewles and Artem Gonchar. However, the Greyhounds quickly regained control. At 12:22, Mignosa added a goal to his already impressive night, scoring his 15th of the season off a feed from Fischer to restore the four-goal cushion.
The Wolves found the scoresheet once more on the powerplay in the third period, as Adam Nemec scored his first of the season at 4:29, assisted by Gonchar and Lemieux. Any hope of a late comeback was sealed in the final minute, when Brady Smith fired home an empty-net goal with 45.2 seconds remaining to secure the 6–2 victory for the Soo.
Between the pipes, Noah Tegelaar was solid for the Greyhounds, stopping 21 of 23 shots to earn the win. Sudbury’s Bjorn Bronas and Karesen Chartier combined to make 23 saves on 28 shots in the loss.
The Greyhounds will look to build on the win when they host the Ottawa 67’s for their only visit to Sault Ste. Marie this season on Friday, January 9th, with a 7:07 p.m puck drop at the Memorial Gardens. Meanwhile, the Wolves return home to face the Niagara IceDogs on Friday, January 9th in a 7:05 p.m start in Sudbury.
