Over the February 14th and 15th weekend, the second-place Soo U18 Greyhounds welcomed the fourth-place Sudbury U18 Wolves to Sault Ste. Marie for a two-game GNU18HL set, and the Greyhounds delivered back-to-back wins highlighted by a dominant six-point performance from Makks Demidovich.
The Greyhounds opened the weekend on Saturday, February 14th with a strong first period in an afternoon matinee. At 7:52, Makks Demidovich got things started on the power play, scoring his 16th of the season with assists from Dreyon Boissoneau and Frankie Reda. Just under two minutes later at 9:37, Espen Escasa doubled the lead, netting his 35th of the year off feeds from Frankie Reda and Dreyon Boissoneau. The first-period surge continued at 12:34 when Demidovich struck again, his 17th of the season, set up by Anthony Spironello and Boissoneau to make it 3–0.
The second period was scoreless, but Sudbury got on the board early in the third. At 3:04, Denver Mulligan scored a power-play marker for the Wolves, assisted by Mekhi Levesque and Gillis O’Daiskey. The Greyhounds answered quickly at 6:19 as Hunter Thorkilson restored the three-goal cushion with his 18th of the season, assisted by Jackson Thornton. At 7:51, Escasa added his second of the game and 36th of the season, with Aiden Giovanatti picking up the assist. Escasa completed his hat trick at 17:58 on the power play, scoring his 37th of the campaign unassisted to cap a 6–1 Soo victory.
Sebastien Brassard earned the win in goal for the Greyhounds, while Jayden Claveau took the loss for the Wolves.
Game two on Sunday, February 15th, the Soo carried its momentum into the weekend finale, striking early once again. At 6:05 of the first period, Hunter Thorkilson opened the scoring with his 19th of the season, assisted by Nico Bossio. Just over two minutes later at 8:10, Demidovich continued his standout weekend, scoring his 18th of the season with helpers from Nathan Dupuis and Finlay Carlson. The Greyhounds made it 3–0 at 13:46 when Dreyon Boissoneau netted his 13th, assisted by Frankie Reda and Demidovich. Only 25 seconds later at 14:11, Demidovich struck again for his 19th of the season and second of the game, with Cam Kontulainen earning the assist.
In the second period, Frankie Reda extended the lead at 6:45 with a power-play goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Demidovich. Sudbury responded with a pair of power-play tallies: Robert Landry scored at 15:22 during a 6-on-5 delayed penalty situation, unassisted, and Janssen Fransen followed at 15:50 with his 14th of the season, assisted by Logan Moran and Carter McAllister, cutting the deficit to 5–2.
The Greyhounds put the game away in the third. At 8:59, Espen Escasa scored on the power play for his 38th of the season, assisted by Frankie Reda and Cam Kontulainen. With 1:07 remaining at 18:53, Anthony Spironello closed out the scoring with a power-play goal, his 10th of the season, assisted by Aiden Giovanatti, sealing a 7–2 Soo win.
Sebastien Brassard and Lucas Martin shared the goaltending duties for the Greyhounds, with Martin playing the second period due to an equipment issue for Brassard. Owen Lamothe was in goal for Sudbury.
With the sweep complete, the Soo U18 Greyhounds now turn their attention to Thursday, February 19th, when they host the visiting Thunder Bay U18 Kings at the John Rhodes Centre for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
