Algoma Thunderbirds Close 2025–26 OUA Season with Final Road Trip to London and Windsor

On Friday, February 13th, the Algoma Thunderbirds closed out their 2025–2026 season with a meaningful final road trip, as seniors Riya Donnelly, Brooke Gruhn, Mercedes Mazzuca, and Patrick-Oliver Mpoyi boarded the bus for the last time as student-athletes. Algoma wrapped up the OUA basketball campaign with weekend matchups in London and Windsor against the Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers.

Game one of the weekend saw the Algoma women face Western on Friday night in London. The Thunderbirds battled but fell 105–52 to the Mustangs. Brooke Gruhn led Algoma offensively with 14 points, one rebound, and logged 38 minutes on the hardcourt. Taylor Randall added 12 points and one rebound in 24 minutes of action, while Mercedes Mazzuca contributed 10 points in 21 minutes.

The women returned to the floor on Saturday in Windsor, where they wrapped up their season with a 72–46 loss to the Lancers. Sadie Grawbarger paced the Thunderbirds with a double-double performance, scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds while playing 39 minutes. Ryan Zimmer chipped in 10 points and one rebound in 15 minutes, while Annabelle Lefebvre and Elia Galdos each scored six points. Lefebvre added six rebounds in 32 minutes, and Galdos matched her on the glass with six rebounds in 21 minutes.

On the men’s side, Algoma opened the weekend in London on February 13th against Western. Kal-El Alejo and Chance Beaudoin-Skerritt shared the team lead with 13 points apiece in an 80–54 loss. Alejo added four rebounds in 34 minutes, while Beaudoin-Skerritt also grabbed four rebounds in 31 minutes. Shalom Anyikwa rounded out the top contributors with nine points, eight rebounds, and 27 minutes of floor time.

The Thunderbirds closed the 2025–26 season on Saturday in Windsor against the Lancers. Jean-Luc Cubahiro led Algoma with 18 points, eight rebounds, and 29 minutes of action. Anyikwa continued his strong weekend with 13 points and four rebounds in 29 minutes, while Beaudoin-Skerritt added another 13 points and three rebounds in 28 minutes. Alejo finished the season with 10 points, five rebounds, and 35 minutes on the court.

With the final buzzer in Windsor, the Algoma Thunderbirds officially brought the 2025–2026 OUA basketball season to a close, marking the end of collegiate careers for their graduating seniors and setting the stage for the next chapter of the program.
