CASS Huskies Avery Cooper to Run for the Algoma Thunderbirds

Algoma Thunderbird Cross Country Running (XCR) team announces newest recruit, Avery Cooper.

Avery is a recent graduate from Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS), and formerly ran for the CASS Huskies. Avery will be studying Biology in the fall. She chose to come to Algoma because she can pursue her education while being close to home. “This is going to allow me to stay close to my former running teams and be able to offer help and guidance to them, and watch my fellow athletes continue to succeed at their level.” She continued, “I’m also glad to be staying local in order to continue competing at local running events.”

Avery is no stranger to the world of running. She has been partaking in local and school events (XCR and track) her entire life. She competed with her high school team for six years, and was named Captain this previous season. We believe her leadership experience will be a great asset to the team! Throughout her running career, Avery has definitely made a name for herself! She is a 2022 North Shore (NSSSA) champion with a 28:30 6K time at the Northern Ontario Meet. She competed in OFSAA for XCR in 2019, and has a 5K PB of 24:00. She also received the Coach’s Award this year.

We asked her what she is most excited for in this new season. “I’m looking forward to learning from Coaches Cam, Danielle and Steph while improving in my sport. I also can’t wait to gain experience in university-level athletics and compete against a wider group of athletes.”

Coach Cameron Wilson stated that “Avery is a talented runner that will play a huge part of our team right from day one. We look forward to coaching her and building upon her running success at the next level. We are very excited to see her progress during her journey at Algoma.” Assistant Coach Danielle Dupuis continued Cam’s enthusiasm, “We’re really excited to have Avery join the team and see what she can do for the 2022/23 season. Her enthusiasm for the sport is tremendous and we look forward to watching her grow.”
