After eighty days of no high school hockey, the Superior Heights Steelhawks took to the ice to take on Wednesday, February 23rd to face the St Mary’s Knights at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League regular season action.
2:11 into the first period, Dawson Wilson opened 2022 with the Knights first goal unassisted to give St Mary’s a 1 – 0 lead. Carter Lidstone sinks the Knights second of the contest at 8:44 with Tyler Luczenski notching the lone contributor on St Mary’s second goal of the game. With their third goal at 8:18, Daniel Bumbaco finds the back of the Steelhawks net to bring the lead to 3 – o for the Knights. Nick Kelly and Noah Delorenzi added the assists on Bumbacco’s goal. Luc Spadafora and Bumbacco set up St Mary’s Brek DiPiero to increase the Knights lead to 4 – 0 at the 5:32 mark of the first. Tristan Gioia closes the gap to 4 – 1 with Superior Heights first goal at 12:49 of the second behind Knight netminder Joel Belec, Owen case drew the helper on Gioia’s goal. 72 seconds after Gioia’s goal, Owen Case sets up Kyler Brown for the Steelhawks second of the game to pull Superior Heights within two.
Kyle Scarfore fires the Knights fifth of the midweek clash with finding the back of Steelhawk goaltender Issac Rice’s net to bring the lead to 5 – 2. Wilson and Darion Perrault had the assists on Scarfore’s goal. Scoring the Knights second unassisted goal was St Mary’s Bumbaco at 9:33 behind Superior Heights goaltender Tyler Greco. With 2:23 remaining in the period, Michael Starzonski sends the Knights into the second intermission up 7 – 2. With sixty seconds left the game, Bumbaco gives the Knights their first win of the 2022 with St Mary’s eighth of the game. Luczenski and Delorenzi contributed on Bumbaco’s hat trick.
St Mary’s coach Frank Medaglia told Saultsports that “I thought we came out of the gates with lots of pace and energy which led to our 4-0 lead by the end of the first. It was great to see the boys back out there together playing a game they love and enjoying themselves. It was a good team effort after a very long pause to our season.”
Next up in high school hockey will be on Thursday, February 24th with the Steelhawks facing the Colts at the John Rhodes Centre in a 3:30 p.m puck drop while the Knights take on the Korah Colts on Friday, February 25th at the John Rhodes Centre in a 7:30 p.m start.
